Hi Guys

Ok soon i have a big choice to make, im 24 and have been in love with the sport of MMA for some time. It's getting to a point in my life where i need to make a choice with what i want to do with my life.

I really would like to start studying MMA's and see how i do at it, even if its not too fight perhaps too help train people etc

A few things really worry me about doing this, im a very obsessive person and if i decide to do it ill throw my whole soul into it and do nothing else until im happy with where i have got to. I used to be very fit but since i got my job in IT 3 years ago ive really let myself go. Im 6 foot 8 and am now quite a bit overweight, my back does not feel 100% as well as my kness (due to my weight i presume, my kness dont affect my walking at all but i can feel that they are under pressure abit) I've also picked up abit of RSI since starting my IT job.

I just wanted peoples opinion on whether in my current condition it was worth going for this or not? Obviously the last thing i want is to train my ass off and then find out that my lazy lifestyle and horrible diet for the last few years has caused me a great deal of damage and i will never be able to compete at a decent level.

Any thoughts and opinions?

if i was you i would start training just to get back into shape maybe take some mma classes but take it slow to begin with see how you feel after that then decide what to do

Well, I think you should consult your doctor to see if it's a safe/good idea. If it is, great, get to workin'. If not...well, work out and stuff, and it'll be cool to take a MA class or two for self-defense, and you can teach it later in your life. Most instructors aren't as good at fighting than they are at teaching anyway. (Some are, some aren't. As long as you know the material you're fine)

Im not saying youll be bad at it, but think about it, like 90% of good mma fighters have been doing thier martial art since 13.

Unless youre willing to do it 9 times a week for 3 years, i dont think you should do it.

But since you said you like mma, maybe you should work for them, like scout for them or something lol.

I have to disagree, I believe Rich Franklin didnt start till he was around 24 and he started learning submissions from a DVD. I agree that too learn some of the traditional martials arts that arent perhaps as good for self defense but have alot more moves too them that starting young is needed but i think for MMA my age isent too bad. I've seen people who have done kickboxing all their life get destroyed in the cage by someone who is just a natrually good fighter.

You can do whatever you put your mind to, and there is no such thing as to old or to fat to start. It may be a bit harder to do in your current state, but that doesn't mean its not possible. MMA may be what you need to get back into good shape. Good luck bro:thumbsup:

BJJ Boy, with hard work and determination, anything's possible. And no, most people don't start until they're around 14-17 anyway. I mean, there are a lot of kids taking things like TaeKwonDo, but:
1. TKD pretty much contradicts everything in MMA
2. Most parents don't enroll their children in MMA classes. Don't get me wrong, it happens, but not often.

So yeah, you've got a shot. Good luck. :)

Go for it. 24 isn't that old. A guy @ our gym is 40 y/o and just had his first fight in the UFC a few months ago.
