imho... always try to have a balance of everything... even snacks...
-eat very often as often as possible...never let yourself be hungry... its a bad sign if your body is hungry
-have beans with everything... lots fiber, making it filling
-dont eat egg yolks
-if you're gonna eat greens, choose spinach its got the best stuff for you
-choose skim or almond milk if you have to
go to snack anytime you get the munchies:
-cup fat free cottage cheese
-scoop of protein powder (whey isolate) 25-40 gms worth of protein
-add globs of natural peanut butter or nut butter (the kind that separate in the jar)

dont rely on exercise to make you lose weight, if anything pure cardio. focus almost entirely on diet.
trust me cutting calories will work. just for your body to continue being alive it takes energy to maintain, eat less calories than you use in a day and you will lose weight, with absolute certainty. also you mentioned "ballooning" i'd guess its water retention, try and lower your sodium intake.
diet is everything. im walking around at 171 atm, but if i wanted to lose weight and cut down my bodyfat% to get my abs back, I'd exercise less and eat way less and more clean.

xeberus brings up a good point, cut down the sodium. IMO, I only notice water retention for a day or two if I eat a high amount of sodium. But it does swell me. I notice the difference in my wedding ring for a day or two.

The reason your having trouble losing weight is because your insulin resistant, obviously.
Don't listen to these people unless they have addressed this problem directly because the rules are different for you.
Spoke with a friend about this he said you need to basically eat like you have diabetes. 5-6 small meals, don't eat tons of carbs and especially on their own, and eat foods low on the gylcemic index. In your case it's just as important to keep your blood sugar in line. Other then that cutting fat is a matter of using more calories then your getting.

Working out does something, but working out will only burn a fractional amount of calories. Pure cardio will burn a decent chunck of calories but burns almost none afterwards. Weight lifting burns a few calories for about an hour of lifting, and burns some aftewards to assist in muscle recovery, but doesn't really have a very significant effect.
Diet is the only real way to lose fat. To put dieting into simple terms:
x - y >/= 1100
x being the number of calories you ingest daily.
y being the number of calories you burn daily.
1100 being the average for subsistance (necessary for bodily fuction) calories in a human being.
On top of the general concept of burning more than you eat, there's the concept of motabolization. To keep your motabolism up you have to eat at the most once every 2-3 hours at the longest. In this way your body is constantly functioning and burning calories.
