Weight Gain Tips

Hey people, ok so I'm new to the whole MMA scene. I have a minimal background with amateur wrestling and not a whole lot else. I have recently started training and getting into shape. My problem is I can't gain weight if my life depended on it. My goal is to reach 200lbs, as I stand now I am 6'4 and 160lbs. Any tips on weight gain or workout regiments to gain weight would be greatly appreciated.

1. It takes time to increase muscle weight.

Most athletes can successfully gain ½ to 1 pound per week if they eat enough food to meet their calorie needs and train properly. Increasing calorie intake by 500 to 1000 calories per day can help supply the extra calories needed to gain lean weight.

2. Choose higher calorie foods from all the groups in the Food Guide Pyramid.

For example, choose a multigrain bread over white bread, or juices and milk over water.

3. Eat larger food portions.

Increasing the amount of food that you eat at one time will supply the calories needed to gain muscle weight.

4. Eat five or more meals a day.

Eat plenty of high calorie snacks throughout the day.

5. Drink plenty of fluids that supply calories like juice, milk, milkshakes, and sports beverages.

For example, drinking 1 ½ quarts of grape or cranberry juice supplies 1000 calories. 1 ½ quarts of 2% milk supplies 720 calories.

6. Set realistic goals.

Hereditary factors can play a large role in physique. You are not going to look like Arnold if your parents look like Pee Wee Herman.

If you are new to the MMA scene, don't concern yourself with gaining weight. With the weight classes set the way they are, you will probably be more concerned with losing weight more often than not.

still 6'4 160 is a little light. he should go up to at least 185 minimum. i think more like 205.

agreed.....little light....im 6'1 215 about and growing muscle and technique... i sed to be 180 around.....best thing to do is protien and carbs.....even if there Fat carbs.....if u gain weight in fat...easyer to gain muscle from that than it is being skinny

This is probably unhealthy so u shouldn't do it but just wanted to share, when I started wrestling I weighed too little so a wrestler told me to eat some left over food about 20 minutes before you sleep, don't go to the bathroom til the morning. You should gain quite some weight.

Ugh... This "get bigger" trend is freaking annoying. The reson why I don't suggest it for MMA is because there are weight classes. In that case, being big (carrying excess weight) does not help! I'm not going to suggest anything really to anyone who is going to post first, "How to I get bigger?" only to turn around 9 months to a year or so down the line to see the same person posting "I've got a fight, I need to drop 20lbs quick!"

Besides, we don't even know how old the OP is. He might just be in his teens, in which case he will probably gain significant amounts of weight once he stops growing into his full height. It happens to everyone.
