Round 1 – A couple big middleweights in there now, and Blake Grice will look in. Brunson tries a couple kicks and a left. Romero keeps his hands up, then throws a jumping knee that gets the crowd into it. But Brunson shoots in across the cage and puts the Olympic wrestler on his back momentarily. Romero pops up quickly, though. Brunson lands a straight left, then ducks under a Romero right. A body punch from Romero is on the mark, and then the two both swing hard in the middle. Romero lands a left, then they trade kicks. Romero tries to track Brunson down. He lands a knee, then in a wild scramble, both men hit the floor. But it’s Brunson who looks to have Romero’s back – and he lands a solid slam against the acclaimed wrestler. Romero gets back to his feet to close the round, but it’s a 10-9 first for Brunson on the MMAjunkie card.

Round 2 – Romero tries to punch to the body, but his right is deflected and hits Brunson square in the groin. Brunson gets a reprieve. On the restart, Romero looks to land some haymakers. But Brunson misses the big damage, and lands a big elbow, then a left hand. He drops levels, but Romero defends. Romero gets a Thai clinch and throws a flying knee. The crowd loves it, but Brunson shakes his head to say there was no damage. Seconds later, Brunson gets another takedown. Romero tries to stay active, but Brunson pops up to full mount with two minutes left on the clock. Romero tries to control his posture, but Bunson drops a big elbow. Romero gets to half-guard and then tries to scramble out. But Brunson keeps him down. With 30 seconds left, the fight moves back to the feet and Romero nearly lands a big uppercut once again. They’ll tie up on the fence to close the frame. It’s a 10-9 second for Brunson, who is a 2-to-1 underdog.

Round 3 – Right jab and a left cross are on the mark for Brunson early. Romero probably needs a finish. Brunson shoots for a takedown, but there’s nothing there. Romero drops down, but Brunson backs out. Romero is coming forward, and Brunson is playing defense and looking to counter. Romero’s uppercut just misses. But then he cracks Brunson with a left hand, then just misses a right. Bur Brunson stays inside and fires back. Romero stays after him, though, and Brunson looks like he’s tiring. Another left is on the button, and Brunson is wobbled. Romero goes after the finish with half the round left. Brunson is covering up. His mouthpiece is on the canvas. Romerois landing good shots. Body and then head. He’s holding Brunson’s head down and punishing his body with massive elbows – just caving his ribs in. Finally, Grice steps in and stops it. Big comeback for Romero.

Result: Yoel Romero def. Derek Brunson via TKO (strikes) – Round 3, 3:23
