Round 1 – The two look for the best position on the feet early, and Nijem tries a front kick about a minute in. Edwards tries to chase Nijem down after another solid kick from him. Nijem staying in the center, and nearly lands a textbook flying knee. Then he kicks to the outside leg, but eats a combo for his troubles. Nijem kicks to the body, then gets out of there. With 90 seconds left, the two suddenly start to get after it – to the delight of the crowd. They trade kicks and punches in a short scramble. Nijem lands a right hand, then throws a nice front kick that is partially blocked. He slips away from a spinning kick from Edwards, then just misses a spinning kick of his own. He hits the canvas, and Edwards latches on to his ankle – and Nijem is saved by the bell. It’s a close first round, and it will be interesting to see what the judges think about that last-second submission attempt from Edwards. But MMAjunkie will give the frame to Nijem, 10-9.

Round 2 – A high Nijem kick is just off the mark, and he slips to the canvas. Edwards takes advantage right away and gets a guillotine choke on. Nijem is trying to defend it and trying to get to his feet. But he can’t. Referee George Allen takes a close look – and Nijem finally breaks free. He’s on top now, and we’ll see how much power Edwards burned out of his arms. Shortly thereafter, Edwards gets a brief triangle attempt, then an armbar in transition. But Nijem pops free and perhaps wisely goes back to his feet. In a weird sequence with two minutes left, Nijem basically grabs Edwards by the face and pushes him down. Edwards pops back up, but Nijem owns the scramble. He gets on top on the ground and lands some punches, then takes Edwards’ back. He’s got a rear-naked choke twice, but twice had to let go. Edwards tries to roll out, but Nijem stays on him with a tight body triangle. He stays after the choke, but Edwards will survive the round. That late bit of solid work from Nijem gives him a 10-9 round.

Round 3 -Edwards may have to get a finish to win here. But 75 seconds in, Nijem gets teh fight to the ground. Edwards looks for an arm, and with three minutes left, they go back to their feet – where Edwards has a solid amount of blood around his left eye. A spinning back kick or Edwards lands to the body with 100 seconds left, but Nijem seems to shrug it off and briefly takes the fight back down to the ground. Back on the feet, he lands a spinning elbow, then eats a kick to the midsection. Edwards drops down looking for a choke, but it’s Nijem who lands a few punches before having to survive a late calf crusher attempt from Edwards. Should be a 10-9 third for Nijem, and a 30-27 win in the fight to snap his skid.

Result: Ramsey Nijem def. Justin Edwards via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
