Round 1 – George Allen will get us going. Whiteley bounces on the outside, and the two trade feints. Pichel pushes inside with a kick and lands a good punch near the fence before the two go back to the middle and trade kicks. Pichel lands a couple of nice kicks, and Whiteley responds by catching one, tying him up and trying to dirty box. But Pichel wins that clinch battle and slams him to the ground. He tries to go to work from half-guard, but there’s not much there for him and he stands up. Whiteley will try to upkick his way back to standing or hope for a standup from Allen – and that’s what he’ll get. They tie up again right away, and Whiteley jumps guard. He’s got maybe an armbar shot on his back, but Pichel isn’t having any of it. Instead, after a brief scramble, Pichel looks for a leg – but Whiteley gets his neck. He’s trying to transition around, but Pichel eventually gets out of the choke and they go back to standing with 30 seconds left. Pichel lands a nice slam with three seconds left and glares at Whiteley after the horn. It’s a close round, but MMAjunkie gives the frame to Pichel, 10-9.
Round 2 – The two trade kicks again early, then punches inside. Pichel keeps coming forward and gets the better of an exchange, but when the fight hits the canvas, it’s Whiteley again looking for a choke. It’s not going to be there for him, and he’ll scoot closer to the fence to try to wall walk back to his feet. Pichel lands some big punches from his knees as Whiteley tries to scramble out. Eventually, he gets back to his feet, but Pichel drags him back down and works some more ground-and-pound. Whiteley gets back to full guard. Pichel goes back up, but then right back down, where he’s been in control on the ground. He briefly looks for a choke before trying to pound away some more. With 25 seconds left, he locks up a body triangle. He won’t get a finish, but he asserted his will just about the whole round. It’s another 10-9 frame for Pichel on our card.
Round 3 – Both guys look to be slowing early in the third. Pichel wants a big takedown, but Whiteley defends it from being a monster, and instead just settles for having to be on his back again. Pichel tries to get to full mount, but can’t quite get there. After a little more time on the ground, Pichel postures up, then stands up and drops a big haymaker down. He’ll try to land some knees to the body, then goes to north-south. Whiteley just has very little to offer here. Pichel is looking for an arm-triangle choke. He can’t get it, but he lands a knee to the body. Back on their feet with 90 seconds left, the two trade knees along the fence and a few punches, too. Whiteley is going to go for an armbar with 30 seconds left, hoping for the Hail Mary. It’s not there. It’s another 10-9 for Pichel, and he should have the fight 30-27.
