Round 1 – Big Dan Miragliotta will be our ref in this flyweight tussle. Moraga wants to shoot, but Ortiz avoids it and kicks to the outside leg. Ortiz lands a few nice punches, then pushes Moraga to the cage. He’s got an underhook and looks to land some knees. Then he basically gently drags the fight to the floor. On top, he looks for some ground-and-pound opportunities, but Moraga is defending well. Ortiz gets off a few elbows as Miragliotta looks on to see if there’s enough action. Ortiz keeps doing just enough to stay on top, but it’s not looking like he’s doing a ton of damage. Still, it’s a fairly dominant first round for him, and he gets a 10-9 from MMAjunkie.

Round 2 – We’ll see what Moraga does differently this round as Ortiz circles quickly outside, then ducks under a big left hand from Moraga. The two trade a few kicks, and Moraga starts working on Ortiz’s lead leg. Moraga lands a leg kick that nearly takes Ortiz off his feet, and as Ortiz is trying to stay upright, Moraga plants a big punch on the button. Moraga goes to work on the fence, but Ortiz breaks off. Then he trips backing up, and again Moraga takes advantage. He goes after his right arm while Ortiz defends and eats elbows to the head. Then Moraga takes Ortiz’s back and gets a rear-naked choke. Ortiz pushes it off, but he’s in a lot of trouble with two minutes left. Moraga looks to stay glued to him, but Ortiz scrambles out and gets to side control. Outstanding momentum shift for Ortiz there to get out of trouble and get to a dominant position of his own. He’ll look for a choke, then swings around and has Moraga’s back for a second. But they go back to the middle and swing away. Ortiz shoots with 20 seconds left and then takes Moraga’s back. Moraga tries to roll out of it, and it’s a fun little end to the second. MMAjunkie gives the second to Moraga, 10-9.

Round 3 – Very well could be all even here, so this is a big round. Ortiz dances outside, then kicks high and misses. He ducks away from a right, then tries to counter with a left. He gets inside for a nice right. Ortiz shoots about a minute in, but Moraga sprawls out of it. High spinning kick from Moraga is just off the mark. He’ll try to land a few punches. With three minutes left, Ortiz lands a good left. Moraga keeps working those leg kicks, then lands a knee in tight before eating a right hand. Moments later, Ortiz catches a kick and fires off a couple punches that land. He then drops down and puts Moraga on the canvas with two minutes left, which could prove to be huge. He gets to side control, but Moraga recovers to half-guard. Ortiz lands some good elbows and punches while Moraga tries to control his posture. With 45 seconds left, he gets back to his feet and shrugs off an Ortiz takedown attempt. But Ortiz takes his back standing and keeps him wrapped up. He lands knees on the fence, then drops him to the floor. And that’s where this one will end. MMAjunkie has the third 10-9 for Ortiz and the fight for him 29-28. We’ll see what the judges say.

Result: John Moraga def. Dustin Ortiz via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
