Round 1 – Herb Dean sees his first work of the night looking in on the flyweights. Ozkilic with a nice right hand early. Smolka tries a spinning back kick that is telegraphed, then tries to kick high. Ozkilic lands a nice right, then blocks another high kick. A second later, he drags Smolka to the canvas. Smolka tries to control Ozkilic’s posture, but he eats a few big bombs and elbows before finally getting back to his feet. There, he lands a nice left hand that stuns Ozkilic briefly. But Ozkilic recovers and lands a solid punch of his own that has Smolka on his bike trying to get out of there. Another left lands for Smolka in tight, but in short order, Ozkilic shoots for a double and takes him back down. After a ground scramble, Smolka pops up and lands some knees, but Ozkilic’s response is another takedown. Back on the feet with a minute left, Smolka nearly lands a flying knee. They trade on the feet to close out the frame. It’s a pretty fun first round, and close. But MMAjunkie will give the slight nod to Ozkilic, 10-9.
Round 2 – A jumping knee by Smolka is met with a big left from Ozkilic. After some more trading, Smolka lands a good kick to the body, then fakes another leaping knee. He peppers off a few jabs, but then eats a punch to the body. Ninety seconds in, Ozkilic shoots for a takedown. He gets it, but has to scramble out of a Smolka choke. Back on the feet, Ozkilic lands a knee and a punch right after it. But seconds later, Smolka gets a beautiful Thai clinch on and lands four successive knees to the body before Ozkilic can finally break away for a moment. But Smolka stays after it and lands a few more. Ozkilic looks tired, and Smolka may want to take advantage. Ozkilic is winging punches, and Smolka is stalking him down. With a minute left, a tired Ozkilic pushes Smolka to the ground. But Smolka threatens with a few leg locks before spinning back to his feet. He’ll get thrown to the canvas once more as the round winds down. But MMAjunkie gives the second to Smolka, 10-9.
Round 3 – Early takedown for Ozkilic. But Smolka scrambles nicely back to his feet, where he lands two nice lefts. He still looks the fresher fighter, and Ozkilic’s hands are down pretty much perpetually at this point. With three minutes left, an Ozkilic takedown attempt goes nowhere, and seconds later Smolka lands a heavy right. Ozkilic responds with an attempt to go to the floor, but there’s nothing there. And Smolka goes right back to work landing punches and popping Ozkilic’s head back. Four big ones, he lands before Ozkilic tries again in vain to keep the fight on the floor. He tries to take Smolka’s back, but Smolka shakes him off and goes to work on top. He’s going after an arm-triangle choke trying to end this thing. He gives up on it and nearly gets to full mount. But instead he stands and drops down punches, then dives back in and gets to mount and rains down the ground-and-pound while Ozkilic covers up. Dean’s looking in closely. Ozkilic will survive the round. But MMAjunkie sees the last for Smolka 10-9, and the fight for him 29-28.
