UFC 181: Anthony Pettis vs Gilbert Melendez

Round 1 – Melendez comes to the center as Pettis takes a deep breath. Melendez rushes forward with punches and moves immediately inside for a takedown. Pettis defends against the fence and pulls back for a high kick. Melendez immediately back inside for a takedown. Melendez ready to grind away. He steps over with one hook from the back and drives in a few left hands. Pettis defending the choke, so Melendez settles for punches when there are openings. Pettis finally able to spin free, and we reset. Pettis wants to strike, but Melendez right back inside. No room to breathe, and this time Melendez drags him down. Pettis pops up to a knee. He drives in a few punches to the body. Pettis finally works free and misses a high kick before landing a spinning kick to the body. But Melendez right back inside and working against the cage. Pettis creates a little room and lands a few very nice jabs, but Melendez back in the clinch. Pettis lands a clean hook, and Melendez buckles a bit. Back to the center.Melendez misses on a takedown. Pettis with a leaping knee, but Melendez just walks back through and inside. Pettis defending well, and he gets away and kicks the body. Good first round. Pettis getting some momentum, but MMAjunkie gives the first to Melendez, 10-9.

Round 2 – Melendez moves to the center again. Pettis jabs and moves. Melendez presses him to the cage, but Pettis gets off right away. They trade punches, and a Pettis right wobbles Melendez a bit. Still, Melendez pressing forward. They’re trading shots and moving. Pettis quicker, but Melendez getting in his blows, as well. Front kick to the face for Pettis. Melendez with a kick to the body, but Pettis answers with two punches. Melendez shoots inside, but Pettis defends, locks in the guillotine and squeezes. He drops to his back and is in full guard. It’s tight. Pettis rolls over to the top and cranks it harder. It’s in, and Melendez has to tap. Great win.
