Round 1 – Maia takes the center as Yakovlev circles to his left on the outside. Maia jabbing and looking to strike. Yakovlev still seeking an opening. Maia shoots in, but Yakovlev is quickly away. Yakovlev not yet showing much in terms of offense. He’s simply circling and staying away. Maia finally lands flush with a strike, and Yakovlev is on the floor. Maia follows quickly to the floor. He gets immediately to mount. Yakovlev tries to tie things up underneath, but Maia postures and lands a few elbows. Yakovlev wants desperately to hold his opponent close, but Maia is finding some room to grind away from the top. Big wlbows scores from Maia. Thirty seconds left, and Yakovlev may survive. Maia thinks armbar but settles for punches from the top before the bell. MMAjunkie gives it to Maia, 10-9. Could easily be 10-8, as well.

Round 2 – Maia again takes the center. He blocks an early high kick from Yakovlev, who then attacks the legs. Yakovlev starting with more offense than he did in the first. He looks for a takedown, but Maia stuffs it and then turns his attention to a trip of his own. He scores it, and with a little maneuvering is right back into mount. Yakovlev nearly exposes his back trying to create some space. Maia’s base is firm for now. Yakovlev gets his back to the cage, but Maia pulls him away from the fence. Maia still firm in his mount. Yakovlev finally finds a way to sweep to the top, and he looks briefly to move to the feet. Maia stays tight, and Yakovlev looks to control the head. He can’t hold it, and Maia settles into guard, where he finishes the frame. Good late work from Yakovlev, but MMAjunkie scores the round for Maia, 10-9.

Round 3 – Yakovlev kicks the leg early. He’s going to need a finish to turn this around. He slips under a punch and scores a takedown but backs away rather than hang out on the floor. Yakovlev continues to chop at the leg. Maia holding the center and looks comfortable on his feet for now. Yakovlev sneaks in an uppercut that seems to bother Maia a bit. Yakovlev continues to batter the leg, but Maia gets inside and scores a nifty little trip and then moves immediately into mount. Yakovlev again in a bad spot. Maia is firm in mount and postures to land the occasional big punch or elbow. Yakovlev scrambles, but Maia moves into an armbar setup. It’s not there, and Yakovlev gets to his feet and tries a mad rush for offense at the end. The round ends, and MMAjunkie gives it to Maia, 10-9, awarding him the fight 29-28.

Result: Demian Maia def. Alexander Yakovlev via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
