Round 1 – Round 1 – Ellenberger shoots in past Moontasri’s punches and tries for a takedown against the fence. Moontasri fights it s Ellenberger presses, but then decides to back off. Moontasri flicks a jab and is caught on his heels again as Ellenberger shoots in. Moontasri lands an elbow to the side of the head. and then catches Ellenberger with a knee as he retreats. Ellenberger locks up the head and lands a knee before Moontasri posts a hand to prevent the follow-up. Action stalls as Ellenberger attempts a knee to the body. Moontasri grabs the fence briefly, and Ellenberger backs off. Ellenberber misses with a wide hook, and Moontasri makes him pay on the next exchange, landing a right hand that drops the twin brother of Jake Ellenberger. Moontasri pounding away as Ellenberger holds a leg and tries to survive. Ellenberger rolles to his back and Moontasri follows, landing several hammerfists that land cleanly. Moontasri stands up overhead, and Ellenberger is wobbly as he’s let up. Moontasri is chasing him down, and a left hook connects. Ellenberger dives for a single leg as Moontasri sprawls and lands hammerfists. Ellenberger takes another clean right as he lays on his side, then rolls to his back. Moontasri isn’t going anywhere. He tries to take mount as Ellenberger tries to get up, bleeding from his nose. Moontasri stands overhead and Ellenberger tries to catch him on the way in with a kick. Round ends, and Ellenberger barely survived. 10-8 for Moontasri, who nearly ended the fight and had both dominance and damage in the round.
Round 2 – Round 2 – Let’s see how Ellenberger recovers from that really dicey first round. Before start, the doctor checked his right eye to see if he could track objects. After the OK, he charges in and lands a left hand. Moontasri counters with a spinning attack, but Ellenberger is already at his back and pushes in for a takedown. As Moontasri rolls, Ellenberger takes the back and tries to get both hooks in. He’s a little high, but he starts landing a few left hands for good measure. Moontasri fails to defend his neck and nearly gives up a choke. Then Ellenberger fires down elbows from the top that land cleanly. Crowd is on his side. As Moontasri rolls, Ellenberger tries for a D’Arce choke, but doesn’t have the leverage or strength to finish. Moontasri now in front of him, and he peels off to plaster Ellenberger with a right hand before taking top position. A few punches overhead for Moontasri, and Ellenberger assumes guard. Moontasri says something to ref, who urges him on. Moontasri stands out of guard and walks away. Ellenberger still looks wobbly. He misses with a left hand, but nabs the takedown when Moontasri lunges. Now, he’s at Moontasri’s back against the cage with 30 seconds to go. Left hands start coming. Moontasri won’t give up his neck. As Moontasri stands, the round ends. Ellenberger takes Round 2, making the score 19-18 for Moontasri on MMAjunkie’s scorecard.
Round 3 – Ellenberger still looks wobbly, but he manages a hug with Moontasri. Immediately, he moves forward and shoots, and Moontasri launches a knee. Ellenberger absorbs it and pushes his foe against the cage, trying for a single. Action stalls. Crowd boos. Finally, the ref separates them. Ellenberger launches a head kick and Moontasri tries the same. He tries to follow up, but Ellenberger dives under and nabs a takedown. Moontasri up quickly against the fence as Ellenberger tries to flatten him. He works knees to the body. Moontasri mugs for the camera. Less than three minutes to work. Again, the ref separates them. Ellenberger circles back and Moontasri tries a front kick. Moontasri takes a elf hook as he tries for an uppercut. He waves on Ellenberger, who subsequently shoots and gets stuffed. Another shot, another stuff, and we’re against the cage as Ellenberger tries to finish a single. Ellenberger adjusts and drives again, but he’s shrugged off, and Moontasri is now overhead, punching down as he tries to free himself of Ellenberger’s legs. Ellenberger hints at a triangle, but no dice. Moontasri now on top, trying to work ground and pound. Ellenberger punches from the bottom. Moontasri ends the fight with a leaping punch that’s blocked. Tough round to score, but MMAjunkie scores it 10-9 for Moontasri, who picks up the 29-27 score.
Result: Joe Ellenberger def. James Moontasri via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)
