Round 1 – Watson takes the center quickly and backs UFC newcomer Alvey up to the fence. Watson changes stances, then kicks high. But Alvey tries to land a big one and pushes Watson back for a moment. Watson goes up high with a kick again, then to the body, then to the lead leg. Watson is a kicking machine right now, peppering them to the legs, then going to the body. A couple more up high are blocked by Alvey, but it’s pretty clear what his game plan is. After eating a few more kicks, Alvey blitzes with a combo. But soon after, Watson is right back in there landing more kicks. The kicks just keep on comin’ for Watson, leaving Alvey to counter with brief blitzes. He lands, though, with an uppercudt and puts Watson on the mat. But after Watson gets back up, he holds his hands out like, “What?” and lands a knee. Watson lands a two-punch combo to the chin, then an elbow seconds later. Alvey tries a Superman punch off the cage, but Watson lands a big right hand. It’s a 10-9 round for Watson, even though Alvey had a few moments.
Round 2 – Watson stays in control early in the second, but Alvey lands a good counter punch a minute in. The two sling after 90 seconds, and Alvey lands. But Watson’s still in control, and Alvey’s face is pretty beat up as he bleeds from his nose. Alvey puts together a decent combo, but again it’s Watson. And seconds later, an elbow really rocks Alvey. He’s wobbly against the fence, and Watson moves in to try to finish. He stays patient, though, and perhaps lets Alvey a little off the hook. With 50 seconds left, Alvey lands flush and puts together a little offense and has Watson retreating. It’s a moment that has the crowd excited about maybe seeing a dogfight, but soon after we’re right back to more Watson. He gets the second, 10-9, on the MMAjunkie card.
Round 3 – Some offense from Alvey comes 20 seconds into the third. He backs Watson up, and then lands a nice right hand. Watson lands a left hook. But Alvey starts absolutely teeing off on Watson. The crowd goes nuts. Watson is pressed to the fence and is trying to cover up. But Alvey lands some more. Now they’re trading, but it’s Alvey picking up the pace in a major, major way. After a minute of this flurry, Watson backs out and seems to have survived the Hail Mary rally. Alvey in less than two minutes in the third landed more than 30 head strikes. Midway through, Alvey now looks like he’s the one in control. The question is, is it going to be too little too late? He no doubt needs a finish. Alvey lands a left hand. But Watson lands a kick and a right. Watson looks wiped out, and his face is wearing it. Alvey lands a kick and a punch, and now the two trade again. With 90 seconds left, they dirty box and brutalize each other some more. Watson lands a good combo, then blocks a kick up high. Alvey’s corner yells for him to steal it. The round may be in the bag for him, but he’d likely still lose a decision from the judges unless he got a couple 10-8s. With 30 seconds left, Watson pushes forward as Alvey tries to sling a home-run shot. Watson goes after a takedown, but he can’t get it. Alvey’s going to get the third round from MMAjunkie, but it should be Watson with a 29-28 victory.
Result: Tom Watson def. Sam Alvey via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
