UFN 57: Joseph Benavidez vs Dustin Ortiz

Round 1 – Ortiz out quickly. He’s firing punches right off the bat, looking to set the tone. Benavidez moving well as he looks to avoid and return fire. Benavidez kicks the leg and punches up top. Both fighters quick as the pace is high. Kicks traded from both fighters as they go back and forth. Both men look content to strike right now. Benavidez seems to have the stronger blows, but Ortiz right there with his quickness and volume. Benavidez mixing in a few solid kicks to the body and head. He sores a big right hand to the ribs. Ortiz is pressing, but Benavidez avoiding well. Benavidez with a nice right hand to the chin. He unleashes a few power shots. Ortiz with a big kick to the body. Benavidez answers with a flurry of bodyshots. Still high speed with one minute left. Benavidez mixing his strikes well and proving the more accurate striker. Benavidez shoots in for a takedown and settles into Ortiz’s guard. Benavidez advances out to side control, where he finishes the round. MMAjunkie gives it to him, 10-9.

Round 2 – Quick start again, and Benavidez looks strong with a few big shots and high kicks that land. Elbows inside for Benavidez, and they exchange in the clinch before he backs away. Ortiz us certainly pressing the pace. He’s not intimidated to stand in the pocket, but Benavidez getting the best of it right now. More hihg kicks, and Benavidez has Ortiz hurt. Ortiz backs away to shake it off, and he actually gets a takedown shortly after. Benavidez doesn’t stay there, getting immediately back to his feet and creating space. Left hand for Benavidez scores flush. They’re both throwing bombs. Ortiz picks the ankle, but Benavidez alertly scrambles free as Ortiz comes in. back on the feet, and they continue to throw. Ortiz has some blood coming from his right temple. He’s still pressing. Benavidez’s right eye is busted up a little. Ortiz’s motor is just non-stop. Benavidez misses on a takedown. Ortiz is durable as can be, but Benavidez just getting the better shots. Ortiz shoots in, but Benavidez easily sprawls and moves to the back, where he finishes the round. MMAjunkie gives it to Benavidez, 10-9.

Round 3 – Benavidez slips on an early exchange. He pops back up, and Ortiz shoots inside. Benavidez defends and wants the guillotine but can’t quite get it. Back to the feet, and Ortiz pulls away. They continue to trade on the feet, and Benavidez is just a little bit quicker. Ortiz drives forward, but Benavidez sprawls out and controls the head. He tries to set up a choke, but Ortiz keeps his neck safe. Back on the feet, and Benavidez again with a flush shot to the chin. Ortiz showing a ton of heart. He’s still pressing forward and bringing the fight to Benavidez. Ortiz defends a takedown and is able to prevent Benavidez from moving to his back. Quick scramble, and they go back to the feet. They scramble agains the cage, and Benavidez thinks about attacking the legs. It’s not there, so he shoves Ortiz away and they go back to the feet. Ortiz is just relentless, but he’s a tiny step behind on the exchanges. He’s not going away though. Left hand for Benavidez lands. He ust misses a big spinning kick. They trade until the final bell. Fun fight. MMAjunkie gives the round to Benavidez, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27. Better fight than that scores suggests, but Benavidez was in charge.

Result: Joseph Benavidez def. Dustin Ortiz via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
