UFN 58: Renan Barao vs Mitch Gagnon

Round 1 – Gagnon moving well to open. Barao pushes him away with a front kick. Gagnon trying to move in and out of range, but Barao kicks him in the thigh. Gagnon tries to rush in with punches, but Barao there to avoid and counter. Gagnon tries push into the clinch, but Barao backs away. Nice jab from Gagnon, who’s doing well to move and not offer a stationary target. Barao tracks him down anyway and lands with a big right. Barao picking up the pace, and he goes again to attack the legs. Gagnon appeared to be stunned earlier, but he’s moving better now. Gagnon’s left eye already showing some damage. Still, he’s making it a fight. Barao scores with a counter left, and Gagnon hits the deck. Barao tries to rush forward, and he winds up Gagnon’s back. He can’t get the choke, so he lets go, and they go to work in the clinch. Knees traded, and round ends there. MMAjunkie gives it to Barao, 10-9.

Round 2 – Barao goes right back to the legs. Gagnon appears to have recovered well and is moving again. Gagnon pushing the pace with strikes, but Barao is there to answer and match the output. Gagnon moves inside and looks for a takedown. Not much there as they work in the clinch. Referee Mario Yamasaki breaks them apart. On the restart, they go back to work. Gagnon still firing big shots, but Barao just a little quicker and more accurate. The clinch again proves a stalemate. They break and exchange before moving back in the clinch. Gagnon is doing well, but he just can’t get a takedown. Yamasaki again breaks them apart. They go toe-to-toe in the center in a few dangerous exchanges for both men. Both score, and Gagnon pushes in again for a takedown. He just can’t get this fight to the floor. Barao stay upright until the bell, and MMAjunkie gives him the round, 10-9.

Round 3 – No quit in Gagnon, and he’s pushing forward to start the final round. Barao there to meet him, and he’s starting to try and turn up the heat a bit. But Gagnon is showing great toughness as he stands and answers. Gagnon walks through a few punches to get into the clinch, and the crowd does not like the plan. Barao easily stays upright agains the fence, and Yamasaki again calls fro a break. On the restart, it’s more exchanges, including a nice uppercut from Barao, before he scores a takedown. Gagnon is quick to get back to his feet, and he even lands a nice knee as they break. They quickly tie up again, and Barao scores in impressive takedown. He has the arm-triangle set up but lets it go. He immediately goes right back to it, and his time he has it. He gets the squeeze and Gagnon has to tap.
