UFN 58: Patrick Cummins vs Antonio Carlos Junior

Round 1 – Carlos Junior eats an early jab but then backs away from a Cummins takedown attempt. They work into the clinch, and Carlos Junior drops in a few knees as he looks for a takedown. Instead, it’s Cummins who gets an inside trip. Carlos Junior busy on his back, and he turns to attack the left leg. Cummins rolls with it as Carlos Junior refuses to let go of the limb. While he’s still got the left leg secured, Carlos Junior tries a heel hook on the right, but it just doesn’t get the torque it needs. Cummins feels safe, and he sits and starts to pound the body. Finally, he gets free and moves back to the feet. Carlos Junior doesn’t follow, so Cummins engages him again on the floor. Cummins moves out to side control, but Carlos Junior holds him tight underneath. Cummins lands a few punches at the end, and MMAjunkie gives him the round, 10-9.

Round 2 – Carlos Junior fires a big right hand to get inside on a takedown attempt. Instead, Cummins stuffs it and winds up slamming Carlos Junior to the floor. Carlos Junior looking for wrist control, but he can’t quite get hold. Cummins working from inside the guard, and he’s scoring punches when space allows. Crowd booing a bit, but Cummins is doing what he can. Carlos Junior goes again to the leg, but Cummins gets through much easier this time and pulls away before settling back down into side control. Carlos Junior scrambles to guard and eventually gets to his feet with one minute left. He misses on a big hook then nearly lands a high kick as Cummins wanted a takedown. Carlos Junior looking to land a bomb, but he gets careless, and Cummins slips underneath and scores a takedown. Late foul called on a low blow, but the round ends on the restart. MMAjunkie gives it again to Cummins, 10-9.

Round 3 – Carlos Junior scores a leaping knee as Cummins tries to move inside. Carlos Junior again wants that huge right, but Cummins slips underneath it and gets the takedown. Cummins grinding away from the top. Carlos Junior looking to be active from his back, but Cummins doing a good job of defending everything and dropping in punches when he can. Cummins not fearful of Carlos Junior’s submission game. He’s controlling from the top. Crowd booing a bit, but it’s hard to ask more of Cummins right now. Carlos Junior creates a small scramble by kicking off the cage, but Cummins settle s right back on top. Carlos Junior gets to his feet with less than a minute, and he tries to take the back. Not there, but he gets to the back and drags Cummins to the floor. He’s on the back, but he can’t get the choke in time. Cummins rides it out and avoids an armbar transition. MMAjunkie gives the final round to Cummins, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27.

Result: Patrick Cummins def. Antonio Carlos Junior via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27,
