Curt Warburton def. Maciej Jewtuszko via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Quote:

In the opening bout of the evening at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia, British standout Curt Warburton (6-2) went to battle with Polish striker Maciej Jewtuszko (8-0) in a lightweight showdown of regional stars. Warburton lost in his debut at UFC 120 to Spencer Fisher via unanimous decision, but he had previously amassed six victories outside of the UFC, which included a victory of The Ultimate Fighter season nine winner Ross Pearson.

Jewtuszko rode an eight-fight undefeated streak heading into this fight with his most notable win coming against Anthony Njokuani at WEC 50 back in August. He is considered by many to be the #1 lightweight out of the growing mixed martial arts scene in Poland. An aggressive striker who has improving grappling skills, Jewtuszko may be a future star as his style is fan-friendly and exciting to watch.

The outcome after the break...

Star-divide

Unfortunately, "exciting to watch" doesn't always translate to success inside the Octagon. Warburton took advantage of Jewtuszko's lacking takedown defense throughout the fight, dominating him in the first round of action after an initial takedown with elbows and punches from top control. The second round was slightly more competitive as Jewtuszko was able to roll for a leg lock attempt and land on the feet, but Warburton was relentless along the fence in the clinch, neutralizing Jewtuszko's aggressive striking.

The final round was more of the same with Jewtuszko actively seeking out a way to fire a downing blow through Warburton's defenses. Warburton wisely evaded any shots and tied up Jewtuszko, eventually landing a final takedown at Jewtuszko tried to land a heavy knee. Jewtuszko was unable to regain his feet from the mistake, dropping an unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

The win keeps Warburton on the UFC's roster for another fight while humbling the previously undefeated Jewtuszko and hopefully helping him realize that he needs some wrestling ability to supplement his striking.
