McDonald by SD:

Round 1 - Lots of circling early. The fighters swing and miss. McDonald tags Cariaso early and he hits a knee, but he quickly pops back up and then fends off an aggressive takedown. He eventually pushes McDonald away and is recovered. Cariaso snaps off a nice low kick. He snaps off another and ducks under a punch. McDonald checks a high kick but eats another low one. McDonald throws a flurry, but Cariaso easily avoids it. McDonald gets through a left and just misses on a big head kick. The fighters trade wildly. Cariaso shoots, but McDonald looks for the guillotine before letting it go. Cariaso lands a low kick but is hit with a punch and forced to the mat (more from the momentum than the actual punch). McDonald moves into full guard and works from the top. McDonald postures up and lands a nice right and then allows Cariaso to stand. Cariaso lunges with punches but but doesn't have the reach. The fighters then place a dangerous game of slugfest but neither lands. McDonald whiffs on a head kick and scores a takedown before the round ends. It was pretty close, but MMAjunkie.com scores it 10-9 for McDonald.

Round 2 - Cariaso checks a head kick and then misses with a lunging punch. McDonald connects on a body kick. The fighters circle, and Cariaso moves in and eats a punch while failing to clinch. The fighters collide while throwing punches. Cariaso throws a body kick but slips in the process. McDonald waits for him to stand and eats a body kick. Cariaso throws another body kick that knocks him off balance, but he's back up again. Cariaso throws another kick, but McDonald grunts from an apparent low blow, and a timeout is called. A replay shows it landing flush. A touch of gloves get us underway again. Each fighter whiffs on a head kick, but Cariaso then lands a kick to the shoulder. McDonald is having a hard time adjusting to his opponent's speed and footwork. McDonald shoots, takes a knee to the body, and then puts Cariaso against the cage and fights for the takedown. He can't get it, and they restart in the center. Cariaso throws a low kick, but McDonald times it perfectly, moves to side control, and briefly works an arm-triangle choke before they're back on the feet. MMAjunkie.com scores a close round 10-9 for McDonald.

Round 3 - The fighters trade kicks, but little substantial lands. McDonald lands a nice combo of lunging punches, but Cariaso shoots and gets the takedown after ducking. He lands in full guard, frees a leg, but McDonald pulls him back into guard before nicely transitioning back to his feet. Cariaso takes the center of the cage, throws a punch, but is taken to the mat by McDonald. Cariaso, though, traps an arm with his legs and a triangle lock, but a patient McDonald eventually escapes and gets back to his feet. The fighters circle some more, and each is hesitant to pull the trigger. Cariaso misses on a body kick but spins around and lands the next attempt. McDonald ducks under a big right and then another. Cariaso is firing off head kicks but can't close the distance to land them. McDonald tries one of his own but can't get it. It's another close round that MMAjunkie.com scores 10-9 for Cariaso. Michael McDonald def. Chris Cariaso via split decision (27-30, 29-28, 29-28)
