Round 1 - Referee Josh Rosenthal oversees this middleweight bout. Simpson moves forward quickly, and he trips Tavares on an early caught low kick. Tavares stays up, but Simpson swarms him and drives against the cage. Tavares showing excellent balance in the clinch. Tavares tries to circle off, but Simpson continues to press in. Crowd desperately wants a restart. It finally comes with a little more than tow minutes. Tavares feigns a few punches, waiting for the takedown to come. It doesn't, and Tavares lands a crisp right. Simpson answers with a combination and moves right back into the clinch. Simpson twists and turns and drags Tavares down, but he pops right back up. Rosenthal again gives Simpson a lot of time to work in the clinch. Crowd doesn't like it. Brief flurry in the closing seconds shows the best action of the round. Not a lot there, but MMAjunkie.com gives it Simpson, 10-9.
Round 2 - Tavares looks to bang early. He staggers Simpson with a left. Still, Simpson recovers and moves to the back as Tavares rushes in. Tavares spins into the hold, but Simpson continues to press in against the fence. Tavares spins off the cage, but he's back on it in a flash. Simpson grinding away from the outside. Tavares circles off again. Tavares drops in and delivers big takedown, but Simpson pops up and locks in a guillotine choke. Tavares pulls his head free after a few tense moments. Simpson lands a knee while controlling Tavares' head. One minute left. Short punch inside. Simpson still working the bodylock. Short punches inside for Simpson. Tavares continues to show nice balance while remaining upright. Tavares had some great moments in the round, but MMAjunkie.com awards Simpson the round, 10-9.
Round 3 - Tavares wants to bang, but Simpson will only tease with strikes before moving into the clinch. Tavares pulls away and lands a crisp combination. Still, Simpson just rushing through the blows to get into the clinch. We're in a familiar position as this final round unfolds. The fight hits the deck briefly, but Tavares pops back up. Still, Simpson is glued to him and remains in the clinch. Tavares just can't get the space he needs. It's a frustrating fight for him and the crowd. Restart with 40 seconds left. Tavares lands a low kick, but as he looks to punch, he's taken to the floor. Punches come from Simpson. Tavares pops up in the closing seconds and tries to pounce. At the final bell, he shoves Simpson, though cooler heads quickly prevail, and he apologizes. Simpson doesn't look interested.
