Round 1 - Referee Herb Dean in the cage for the lightweight return of Escudero, a former winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," and he gets a warm welcome back from the crowd. Volkmann with an early low kick form southpaw stance. Escudero returns the favor. Volkmann pawing a jab that doesn't land . Escudero lands another kick, and Volkmann shoots in. Escudero grabs a guillotine choke and falls to his back, but Volkmann moves out to side control and relieves the pressure. Volkmann looks to posture up and punish, but he doesn't land much with Escudero trying to kick wildly from the bottom. Two minutes in, and Volkmann is in half-mount. Volkmann lands a few left hands from top, but the crowd wants the pace to pick up a bit. Escudero tries to roll and create space to rise, but Volkmann just remains tight on top. Volkmann riding very heavy from the top. Dean allowing him to work despite the methodical pace of the fight. Dean does advise Volkmann to work more, but he's comfortable grinding away. Crowd boos in the final minute. Escudero not taking damage on the bottom, but he's certainly losing the round. Volkmann does threaten the neck, but it's not there. Round ends, and it's all Volkmann, 10-9.
Round 2 - Escudero still has some spring in his step, and he's looking to punch. Volkmann shoots in, and Escudero again looks for the guillotine. Volkmann again pops out to side control and works his head free. Exact replica of the first frame, and Volkmann again sets up on top in half-mount. Crowd boos 90 seconds into this round. Dean is watching closely. Escudero gets full guard and lands a few elbows. Volkmann punching a bit, but Dean stands them up, much to the crowd's delight. Escudero tries to uses his hands again, but Volkmann just walks right into the clinch. Volkmann circles to the back and latches the body. Escudero tries to stay pinned to the cage, but Volkmann works him to the floor. Escudero tries to work his back to the cage, but Volkmann jumps to his back. One hook is in, and Volkmann tries to sink in the rear-naked choke. He's a little off to the side, but the right arm is there. Can't create the torque, but Escudero is absolutely stuck with less than a minute remaining. Escudero again not taking a ton of damage, but Volkmann is all over him until the final bell, taking another clear round, 10-9 on the MMAjunkie.com card.
Round 3 - Jabs traded to open. Volkmann may actually try and open p a bit, as he launches a kick. Escudero with a knee, but Volkmann scores another takedown. Escudero wants the choke for a third time, but it's just not there. Volkmann is on top and working for position. Escudero rolls, and Volkmann trying hard to take the back. Escudero using the cage to prevent the pass, but Volkmann has the left hook in and is trying hard to get the back. Dean issues a surprise standup. Seems a bit lucky for Escudero, but Volkmann is undeterred and closes the distance immediately on the restart. Two minutes, and the boobirds are out again. Volkmann pressing in, and Escudero elbows the body. He grabs hold of a power guillotine choke, then hits the floor and adjusts to a north-south choke. Volkmann is scrambling to his fett, but Escudero adjusts and sinks it in deeper. The squeeze looks tight, but it's not there. Escudero finally releases and ends up seated on Volkmann's head. It's a spirited exchange, but it's not enough. MMAjunkie.com scores the final round for Escudero, 10-9, but awards the fight to Volkmann, 29-28. Jacob Volkmann def.
