So you are saying they are traitors?

U.S. fans root for many non-americans. Candian fans root for some non-canadian fighters.

I don't see what any of it has to do with the term "Mecca of MMA".

lol, nope... I fully believe Shields deserved his praise in the final two rounds. He pushed the pace, knowing he had to make grounds, and GSP simply wasn't looking to engage back. That's worthy of applause. That said, GSP had suffered a nasty eye poke, but plenty of have fought through worse. I somewhat felt like GSP crumbled towards the end, and the fan response obviously demonstrated this.

Also, I don't know that Mecca refers to birthplace or which country produces the most or the best. It strikes me as meaning 'focal point' or 'centre'. By that logic, it still ought to be the US, as that's where the magic happens (business wise). Though again, I still find it a flawed term, as the UFC is popular because several countries have embraced it. No one place can lay claim to making the UFC what it is today. It was a worldly effort as far as fandom goes.

Hey I agree.

Especially on your points of GSP being a giant poosay.

I'm just kidding. I'm really not.

I look at Dana's comments and what I think he is intending to say is there are a lot of Canadian fans as a percentage of the population.

Or maybe I am giving him way too much credit.

Either way, the fact is there are 2.5 million people living in toronto. It is the biggest city in Canada, and actually top 10 in north america. Compare that to the population in large cities in Brazil.

Canada pop = ~34 million
Brazil pop = ~195 million

Anyway, why the debate here? It's just Dana asskissing/promoting.

This. Before Dana went to Brazil, he basically said that USA was the biggest market realistically. Mostly because of the population, but he called Canada the "Mecca" because P4P Canada was the UFC's biggest market. He and alot of UFC personel and fighters believe (i wonder if they do research on this) that per Capita, Canada has the most UFC/MMA fans. And they make alot of money off these fans, especially in regards to PPV buys.

Now that he went to Brazil, Brazil probably has taken over the USA as the biggest market as a whole. But it hasent taken over that particular spot Canada has. Im pretty sure the UFC does research before they move into a particular market. Which is why they have felt confident in doing a stadium event in Canada and Brazil. And not as confident doing it in the UK or Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

I think the way Dana looks at it as who's ass he has to kiss to make the most money for the UFC. And so far, its been Canada and soon to be Brazil.

Neither Brazil nor Canada is the Mecca of MMA because the UFC goes to these places more than once a year.

... I hope someone sees what I did there. Yeah, I know, it wasn't that funny.

All I have to say is Instinct MMA. Watch it, love it and I love the french intro song (I speak french). Quebec produces some beasts in MMA.
