Why I want Jon Jones to Win

First off, I am a Jon Jones fan... but not a big one. I like him because he always puts on great fights and he has impressed the hell out of me (and just about everyone else). He's accomplished a lot for his age and that's why I don't mind that he can be a bit arrogant at times.

However, something about his personality doesn't really click with me (not the arrogance). My favorite fighters have personalities I can like on top of there fighting ability. That's why Jones isn't even in my top 5.

So I write this remaining unbiased as possible. For the record, I am a Rashad Evans fan too. They are both almost equally liked in my book. Jones just slightly more.

When I think about this fight, I remember what Jones has done so far. It truly has been incredible. After his first couple wins, everyone called him all hype and flash. Then the guy won the belt in devastating fashion. People then claimed that it was because Shogun was off. After the rampage fight it was because Rampage was so one dimensional. Then the Machida fight happened and it left almost no more excuses. Of course some of the same (now dwindling) people said that it was because of Jones' size. That's a pretty ridiculous excuse to write him off and those same people will always find an excuse to go against a fighter that they don't like.

The fact is Jones is a true prodigy. Coming from no mixed martial arts background to holding the title in one of the toughest divisions of the biggest mixed martial arts organization in the world at such a young age on top of it all.

Enough with ranting about things everyone already knows.

If Jones loses this fight, it will throw the entire LHW division back in limbo. Jone's finished Machida who finished Rashad. Yet Machida lost to Rampage who Rashad beat. Yet Jones finished Machida and Rampage but then would have lost to Rashad. If Jones loses, you will need a freaken zen diagram to put this division in some sort of contender order.

Most importantly, MMA could use another super star. I believe that Jones is far more marketable at this point. He has a lot of hype, and the wins to back that hype up. He could easily turn into or surpass the popularity of GSP and A. Silva.

I know what hardcore Rashad fans are thinking: So could Rashad.

But that's just not true for several reasons. 1. Rashad is in the middle of his career. 2. Rashad has been brutally knocked out (I know GSP has as well. But does anyone think that a Machida re-match would go much differently? IMO Rashad still looks like the same fighter). 3. Rashad isn't as marketable as Jones. A middle career guy who's been brutally KO'd versus a young champ who's destroyed everyone he's faced. Jones is easily more marketable.

In a nut shell, I believe that if Jones can beat Rashad decisively and simultaneously clear the division out, it will make him the next super star. Super stars bring more fans to the sport. More fans to the sport means the sport will grow. I just don't think Rashad is capable of doing the same thing if he wins.

My reasons for wanting Jones to win have almost nothing to do with him as a person or as a fighter... nor do they with Rashad.

RIP Jordan Corder. Watch over me from above brother.

If he beats Rashad he's easily going to be on the level of GSP and Anderson, although I do think Anderson's going to retire if he beats Chael so in my mind Jones will replace Anderson and take his place and will be an upgrade if you will due to the fact Anderson doesn't speak english or does and just refuses to depending on who you listen to.

The only downside to Jones winning is the fact that eventually LHW will get stale, Bader, Rampage and Shogun looked beyond helpless against him and while Machida gave him his toughest fight he ended Machida in the most brutal manner of any of his opponents imo. If he wins and fights Hendo and beats him and then beats Gustaffson there's not that many appealing match ups for him except the Strikeforce Champion and neither Feijao or Mousasi really pose that much of a threat to him and unless he goes up to Heavyweight we're gonna get fights like Silva/Leites and Hardy/GSP.

I would like to see him fight Thiago. He may not stand a a chance but it would probably be exciting to say the least.

No way man. Sure he could be popular for a MMA fighter in the states, but Anderson is huge in Brazil, he's in burger kind commercials and everyone knows who it is. People who don't even know what MMA is know, who GSP is in Canada and some in the states. How many people seen that bud light commercial Jon was in and didn't even know who he was. Don't get me wrong, he could possibly be very popular, but beating Rashad won't make him a national sensation. Imo at least, I don't think any MMA fighter will ever be as big as GSP or Anderson are in their home countries. Still too much controversy surrounding MMA in the states.

I'm talking about when it comes to the discussion of whose the best fighter in the world, P4P rankings, stuff like that not so much popularity. The UFC already promotes him as the face of the company but when it comes to the "whose the best in the world" discussion it's still Anderson and GSP due to their title reigns.

Okay, that I can sign on to. If he walks through Rashad like he has everyone else he'll jumped GSP. Don't know that anyone will ever surpass Anderson though.

give jon jones 2 more years.. GSP wont be in the discussion anymore, it will be silva and jones. (Not because gsp didnt dominate or couldnt "beat them if they weighed the same", but because the lack of finishes and excitement.)

Sorry PheelGood but you put down some of the exact reasons why I don't want Jones to win.

Personally, I don't want want there to be anymore fans. I don't want the UFC and MMA to get any larger than it already is. The sport is big enough.

I much prefer the popularity gauge when the earlier seasons of The Ultimate Fighter was airing. It was semi-popular but still low key enough to not be considered commercial. The way things are going right now..specially with Bones. I don't like the vibe. I just don't and'm not sure why you think we need more fans than we have now, tbh.

Jones may be young and all that, but he has neither the charisma nor the intelligence to really transcend the sport and bring it high into the mainstream. He is young guy with awesome fighting abilities, that's it. He is no different than GSP in that regards. He'll have the division on lock until somebody better comes along if were to beat Rashad, which ain't happening. Chuck Liddell was in the middle of his career and had a few losses of his own and he was able to help with the exposure of MMA, so i'm not sure why you don't think that Rashad couldn't.

Divisions sort themselves out no matter who the champ is, it just may take awhile. When Rashad wins, I have this weird feeling that he may defend the belt once against Dan Henderson and then make the jump to 185.

Great post as usual, but I cant stop disliking Jon Jones and routing against him. The just comes off as way to impressed by himself. I continue to hope that he gets beaten, but the thing that bums me out is that I highly doubt that happens in the near future. The guy really is a prodigy/phenom...a phenrodigy or a prodhenom...I recognize and respect his immense talent, but I cringe everytime he talks and we have to hear about how wonderful he is. For christ's sake, he might as well start talking exclusively in the first personn and get it over with.
