Rashad Evans: Greg Jackson is About Greg Jackson, Not the Team

Quote:
The word divorce rarely comes along with anything but a negative connotation attached to it.

Whether it’s a couple splitting up or a company separating from an employee or shareholder, divorce is never easy.

So it’s without much surprise that the very public split between UFC 145 headliner Rashad Evans and his former coach Greg Jackson has been anything but friendly.

Fighters leave training camps or coaches all the time in MMA, but rarely does the reason why hit the headlines like it has in the case of Evans and Jackson. It all stems from the introduction of Jon Jones to the team by Greg Jackson, according to Evans, and it was all downhill from there.

“Like I told Greg at the time, I told Greg I don’t think it would be a good idea, but Greg did what Greg wanted to do for Greg,” Evans explained about how Jones was brought into the camp and team.

“That’s why Greg brought him on because Greg wanted to do what he wanted to do for Greg.”

Evans worked with Jackson for several years and came up in the UFC under his expert tutelage, but now they stand on opposite sides of the cage, and the former light heavyweight champion has had few kind words to say about his ex-coach.

Evans says that Jackson is more about self-promotion than actually being the best coach to the athletes on his team.

“That’s the thing about him. Greg talks about ‘for the team, for the team.’ The team consists of ‘I’ which is Greg Jackson. That’s what the team consists of, it’s about Greg Jackson getting the ‘Coach of the Year’ awards. That’s what it consists of,” Evans said candidly.

Most of the fighters at Team Jackson would probably argue with Evans when speaking about their coach, but the former Michigan State wrestler isn’t budging on his opinion, and it was a harsh lesson learned at the time.

Evans has now been a part of his new team at the Blackzilians for the better part of the past year, and he says he’ll never be put into a situation like the one he had with Jones and Jackson again.

Never ever again.

“I wouldn’t do that; I wouldn’t put myself in the position again. I wouldn’t bring myself with somebody that I knew would be a contender,” said Evans.

“I would never put myself in that position again.”

While I think Rashad might be right about Jackson I think he is trying to prove his point the wrong way.

I'm certain Jackson gets a certain amount of personal satisfaction watching his guys wins their fights. Also make no mistake that the more success there is in his camp, the more profit in the training there is.

I really doubt that Greg doesn't care about his guys though. He invests a lot of time into these guys that they start to feel like family. I bet this ordeal with Rashad is hurting him personally due to their history.

I'm not going to fault anyone for trying to get ahead in life and certainly think there re far more malicious ways to be successful then how Rashad is projecting Jackson.

I could be wrong but I think rashad is being biased based on his own experiences and selfishness.

I think Rashad sounds like a baby. I mean how could Jackson pass up on a talent like Jones? Rashad will never achieve the greatness of Jones.

If they were like a family then why did Jackson go against Diego and Rashad pleas to not bring in GSP and Jones? besides the obvious reason being money..

I'm not hating on Jackson for making money. it's just a slimy way to go about it when he is always playing up the "like a family" shtick. the guy is just a fake.

I don't know Jackson so I can't say for sure, but what it looks like from the outside, is that its obvious he isn't all about the family, otherwise he wouldn't keep bringing in fighters.

If it was all about family, you would have a core group of fighters and thats it, you wouldn't keep bringing in the next big talent whenever they come along.

AKA having Koscheck and Fitch, two fighters in the same weight division means they don't care about the team.

Team Quest having Chael Sonnen, Yushin Okami and Dan Henderson, three fighters in the same weight division means they don't care about the team.

If Rashad wants to train where he's the only person in his weight division...

I hope Anthony Johnson moves to lhw so Rashad can complain about how blackzilians only care about themselves because other fighters in his weight division train there.

Have Koscheck/Fitch even remotely thought about fighting each other...nope

Okami went to train with Chael only AFTER Chael beat him in a match, and Henderson wants to fight at LHW, and only wants 1 match at MW, and thats Anderson, regardless if he has the belt or not.

Those comparisons aren't really comparable to Rashad's situation.

GSP trained with Jackson almost every fight since he got there, but he stopped training there now because Condit permanently trains there, and he's the #1 contender.

You mean like the time Rashad was upset that Jardine was a contender in LHW division...oh wait that never happened.

I don't get it... so Greg Jackson is only allowed to train ONE person from each weight class???

I don't get this either. The guy runs a camp, what else is he supposed to do? Train one good talent at each weight class and then a bunch of tomato cans?

How would the top guys get better if they only trained against guys that would never be a threat to them.

These fighters need to get over this "Team" thing. Just like TUF, the UFC is not a Team sport. There are no "Teams", no uniforms, no Head Coaches, no team playoffs.
If you are worried you might have to fight a guy you train with sometime in the future, it should be up to you to decide how much and how little you want to share with him and show him.

But I hate the idea of the best not fighting the best just because they were on the same "Team".

Maybe sometime, in the future, as the sport grows more and more, there will be enough talent to spread around to have a team vs team concept, and have playoff's and the whole deal.
