Chuck Liddell: Rashad Evans knows Jones isn't invincible

Quote:
Chuck Liddell has ridiculed the odds-makers who have made Rashad Evans a huge underdog against Jon Jones at UFC 145, insisting there is one massively important factor at play this weekend: The challenger knows the champion is not invincible.

Jones puts the UFC light-heavyweight title on the line on April 21, and only the boldest punter is rushing to back against him. The champ has never been beaten, other than a sole disqualification in the act of winning.

Evans, however, rarely makes a habit of losing either. Only Lyoto Machida has defeated him, and the No. 1 contender has the advantage of having previously trained with Jones.

Liddell, the former 205lb champion, does not buy into the suggestion that either man knows what the other will do as a result of their history together. However, he is convinced it will stop Evans taking any fear into the Octagon, as the likes of Rampage Jackson and Lyoto Machida may have done.

"I don't know who it affects, the fact that they've trained together, I'm not even sure it does affect it," Liddell told ESPN. "Some guys are gym fighters, some guys are better in the ring. However, it is always interesting when guys have trained together before.

"The fact is people talk about Jon Jones having an aura of invincibility but when you've trained together as much as they have that goes out the window. That part of the fight is maybe a new thing for Jones."

Everyone is different but, I think, for most fighters getting into the Octagon with someone they don't like is a great motivation in training. Every time you are tired or holding a little back, you think about losing to this guy you can't stand and it helps you give 100%. That's how I was with Tito, I couldn't stand the idea of losing to him and so I trained harder.

"I'd love to know who really got the best of it when these guys trained together. You get a feeling for someone when you spar with them. That's why I was so confident against Tito; I'd beat him up standing, wrestling and at BJJ when we trained together years before out fights and I knew I was in his head because of that. Listening to Rashad, it seems from watching the Primetime show that he feels he's in Jon's head a little. He sounds very confident and I think that's based on experiences in the gym. I'm glad he is confident, because that's something you have to have against Jones.

Liddell, who continued to work with the UFC after his decision to retire, admits he has spoken with both Jones and Evans prior to fight night. And the Iceman insists Evans is not putting on any pre-fight hype - he is every bit as confident as he looks.

"It's a huge fight, it's going to be a tough fight for Jon, to see if he can continue his reign and his dominance. He's 1/5 or 1/6 favourite but it's a tough fight for him - Rashad is a tough fighter," Liddell said.

"I've spoken to Rashad and he's very confident. Rashad thinks he can push him - he's so confident about that.

"Just talking to Rashad, it doesn't sound like he's putting anything on. He's just confident. I wouldn't comment if it was just an interview, but I actually spoke to him and he is extremely confident."
And why would he not be? Rashad used to make the kid his bitch during training. 4 more days, then it's over.

Great to hear fighters' perspectives. To me Liddell is the epitomy of a fighter, so I take his opinion seriously.

Nice to hear Chuck weigh in on the fight! Been so long since we've heard anything from the Iceman

I'm sure Evan's is confident. As Jones surely is. I cannot wait for this fight.

He makes a good point, and for guys close in age and skillset I would probably agree 100%, a la Fitch vs Kos. But this is nothing like Tito vs Lidell, Rashad saw Jones when he was rough and Rashad was in the middle of his peak. Now Jones has worked away rough edges and becoming smoother and smoother in all areas where as Rashad seems to have still the same skillset, but it is a good skill set which is why it still works.

It won't soon, and Rashad will know it when he tries some "trick" that used to work in training and it doesn't pay off.

Liddell's taken too many blows to the head.

Him and Tito Ortiz represent a past era of MMA, Jon Jones is a new and better era of MMA and Rashad Evans is gonna find that out. He's about to end up like Shogun, Rampage, and Machida a victim of a sport's evolution. Jones is much more creative, much more versatile and much better than Tito. Rashad keeps clinging desperately to two years ago, it's laughable.

I wouldn't call throwing Jones around, slapping him on his head and preventing him from getting up off his back much of a 'trick'. More like a humliating physical expression of 'you're beneath me, and you always will be'. This time,he is going to say that with an exclamation mark.

Well ofcourse he isnt invinsible...such a thing doesnt exsist. It baffles me though some peoples stance on things. Rashad is confident, Jon is cocky. Rashad used to train with Jon and has an advantage...Doesnt Jon have the same advantage as a matter of fact a bit more. Hear me out, when you see how someone is able to control you, you know how to train and what to work on. But according to Rashad he was never dominated like that so he has never felt the level of Jon's talent. So as the "practice" thing goes, Jon actually has more to draw from than Rashad.

Also people saying the Jon has this Aura, but Shogun, Rampage, and Lyoto all thought they had Jon's number and none of them seemed phased by this so called Aura. I respect Chuck's opinion and maybe this will be Jon's toughest fight but every fight since the Bader fight has been his toughest fight, thats what being Champion means.

two of a kind but one won't survive,
my images reflect in the enemies eye,
and his images reflect in mine the same time

I'm looking forward to seeing how many ex spurts declare " I can't see anybody beating Rashad" after he wins.
