Yeah, all this will accomplish is the further devaluing of pure martial arts. I can't wait for someone to tell me they're a black belt in mma so I can laugh in their face. Greg Jackson better hope the rival Joesando academy doesn't get wind of this!

What the hell is the point of this...exactly? Going by this logic, Keith Jardine would be an MMA Black belt and would be ineligible to compete against say...Luke Rockhold unless Rockhold was competing in a hypothetical master's division. And MMA isn't a tournament sport....it's prizefighting.

This is just self-serving nonsense.
It may be self serving and even irrelevant to have belts specifically related to Jackson MMA, but having MMa belts isn't a terrible idea in schools. This inevitably leads to someone, like a Gracie for example, attaching their name to a certain way of teaching and more specific and rigid expectations for each belt. Seems to me Jackson is just trying to get a jump on the entire thing. Right now it seems like a self serving, douche bag move. Really, it kind of is both. But who knows maybe 25 years from now ever major school will be giving out their own brand of MMA belt to help students measure progress and stay motivated.

Either you have the belt, or you don't.
This is what I was planning on saying except you pulled it off exceptionally more cool. Nice job brah.

I dont know how I feel about it. I mean, MMA is a mixture of a bunch of martial arts, some that are ranked, some that are not. How do you get a black belt? Do you have to be a black belt in BJJ and attain a certain skill level in MT and Wrestling?

I like the idea of motivating students with the belts, but just not sure about it!

I see nothing wrong with this. Let's see where this goes first and judge later.

Looks like the franchise is expanding. I wonder how much it'll cost to become licensed as a Jackson's MMA belt-toting Guru?

I think this would be good for internal use inside the gym. Outside of a Jackson's MMA gym, having a Jackson's MMA Black Belt would mean jack squat. But inside their gym, it would be a way to seperate the skill levels. For instance GSP and the other black belts could train together while a white belt like myself would train with other white belts or low level blue belts (if that was how the ranking system went).

outside of that, to go to another gym and say "Im a blackbelt in MMA" you'd likely get laughed out of the place.

and even tho I would have to agree that Jon Jones and GSP would be considered blackbelts in MMA if there was a recognized belting system across all gyms, if Greg Jackson thinks that his gym will single handedly set the standard for a belting system that will one day be used at all MMA gyms, that guy would have to be EXTREMELY full of himself.

While I agree with most of your post, if you went into an MMA gym and told them you were an MMA "black belt" under Jacksons, I doubt you would get laughed out of there.

I mean, at this point, it may sound a little silly to actually say, but in reality, it's likely no one is getting a black belt (or whatever it ends up being) from Jackson unless they are eminently qualified.

And the other gyms will eventually realize this.
