Did Sugar Ray Leonard Lure BJ Penn Out Of Retirement?
Quote:
So far, nothing has been able to sway BJ Penn from his decision to retire. Not Dana White, not his rabid fanbase, nothing.
In what could turn out to be good news for fans of the fiery Hawaiian, legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard ostensibly accomplished what nobody else has been able with just a brief comment over Twitter.
"@bjpenndotcom always loved your "Heart"!!!!!!" the champion pugilist told Penn.
Penn replied: "@SUGARRAYLEONARD "thanks for the kind words..coming from you maybe I should fight again..you just made my day!"
Penn retired with a record of 16-8-2. His last two fights resulted in a draw against Jon Fitch and a unanimous decision loss to Nick Diaz. In both fights the former lightweight and welterweight champion started out strong, but faded down the stretch.
He announced his retirement following the loss to Diaz at UFC 137 this past October.

Doesn't sound like he's being serious, he's just showing respect and being appreciative of Leonard's comment. Penn should and will stay retired.

Why should he stay retired? Its not like hes 40 years old.
He could still be highly competitive at WW or LW if he dedicates himself.

Penn is my favorite of all time but I don't want to see him come back unless he A. Drops back to lightweight and B. Gets back with the Marinovichs or a similar camp and gets in fight shape. Fighting bigger guys and fighting without proper motivation (which ignites proper training) leads to me having to watch one of my favorites get whooped on.

I think he was just expressing how much a comment from a guy like Sugar meant to him. I doubt he'll come out of retirement.

Why did he stop training with the Marinovichs?

This guy never realized his true potential. His entire career would have changed had he had enough stamina.
- although I'm a big fan of GSP...he faded against em the first time
- Matt Hughes #2 (he almost had em in a submission again then gassed out badly (separated ribs) and got pounded out in a crucifix in the next round
- Fitch same story. He did what no man has done and that's take down Fitch and give him a taste of his own medicine.
- He was lighting up Diaz in the first, slowed down in the second, and in the third he was all but gone.

Did you see his last two fights?
Destroyed by Jon Fitch in the third.
Destroyed by Nick Diaz in Rounds 2 and 3.
If he comes back, it has to be at Lightweight, he's took three insane ass whippings at Welterweight.

If he can sort out his mindset and get back to the Prodigy that was a force of nature then I'm all for him coming back. No interest in seeing old BJ again though, it's hard to watch.
