UFC Vet Ricardo Almeida Selected For UFC Judge For Fox 3 Card

Quote:
UFC veteran Ricardo Almeida has been announced as one of the judges for the UFC’s upcoming event in New Jersey for UFC on FOX 3. This move breaths new life into the world of MMA judging. Almeida is an accomplished jiu-jitsu player and has been in the Octagon before. He knows what goes on in the cage and won’t be afraid to give a round to a fighter who attacks off their back, for example.

This is an exciting announcement as UFC veterans make the perfect judges on paper. Judging has been the target of critics for years, but with a high level fighter like Almeida joining the ranks of UFC judge, hopefully we can see less controversy over close decisions.

Will having a UFC vet as well respected as Almeida make the scoring process more accurate?

I think this is a great move however, I predict that after the event there will be someone on this forum saying Almeida is an idiot who knows nothing about MMA.

Good. We need more fighters to become judges.

And if Almeida scores a fight like judges currently have then he deserves to be called an idiot.

I'm just hoping someone doesn't get screwed out of his rightful W just because his opponent "throws up submissions"

Good point. I hope Almeida, A BJJ BB, does not give some guy a round because he hangs on to a weak attempt at a Kumora while on the bottom just to stall.

Cecil Peoples scores it 30-27 for the wrong guy
Ricardo Almeida scores it 30-27 for the wrong guy

This forum would explode.

This is BRILLIANT news. The more ex fighters who become judges the better.

TBH i'd take anyone on this forum over some of the judges they have now. Yes there are contentious rounds and different opinions on control Vs trying to finish but lets be honest some judges dont even get MMA let alone think about it in an analyitical way!

Most exfighters would probably make terrible judges. They carry heavier biases and have suffered physical trauma that would do nothing but hurt their ability to judge a fight. We need a proper system for training, evaluating, and firing judges not more exfighters becoming judges.

What os said....I don't like this one bit.

On top of it, doesn't Almeida have an academy? It's going to look awfully suspicious if he scores a fight for someone who obviously lost but happened to be someone he's trained with in the past.

Im not sure how people think this could possibly be worse then what we currently have. I say let some ex fighters judge, they have way more knowledge then some old dude who has never fought and probobly never even trained.

And Im sure Almeida would be a professional and score the fight fairly. Why would he do something to diminish a sport he probobly loves?

Also, I think Big John and Herb Dean have trained with MMA fighters and they seem to be able to ref fairly.

The athletic commission is most likely aware of this and won't book him to judge any fight that has someone he may have trained with in the past involved.

Like for example if Edgar/Henderson 2 happens in New Jersey, there's likely no chance in hell Almeida gets that fight because of his relationship with Edgar.
