Man this book is gonna be exciting.
Spoken, that's an interesting thought.. You look at how Brandao acted on TUF, everyone was scared of him in the house. He is a real g. I wouldn't be surprised if Thiago Silva peeled back a few wigs back in the day either.

Not to perpetuate the stereotype, but after watching City Of God...I realized the slums are no joke. People ask me why the Brazillians are such tough fighters. I tell them if you were broke and had no food what would you do...
End of discussion.

(Thiago)Silva ran away from home at age 13 due to his abusive father, never to see his mother or younger brother again. From age 13 onwards, he lived (with his grandmother) in the favelas or slums of São Paulo. At age 18, he began to train in mixed martial arts and due to his poverty often had to choose between eating and training

Would explain why he's got a mean mug perpetually plastered on his face.

It's really hard to understand what some of these guys went thru when you come from the US or most of developed countries, it really is.
Most of the people don't realise how hard things are. Let's take example of Forrest Griffin, when he fought in here he made a comment about the water, on how he had to drink bottle water and so many other little things that annoyed him. Well, that's how different things are in here, people some times have to walk miles to get their daily water, food or medical care. Something that any regular US citzen gets from ur own bathroom tap.
This is not the case of the entire country of course. And compared to other third world countries, BR is pretty good, but the rural areas mostly are usually a mess, the slums too.
Luckly I come from a good family , one who could send me to a good school and now I'm here talking with you guys in english. but for the other 85% of the population, public school are the only way to educate your self, and unless your the nerd type of guy that likes to study plenty during you childhood, you'd better of a fighter maybe? perhaps crime?
Who knows? one thing is granted, if you overcome ALL the adversities (like some of our UFC fighters) during your life, you will be damn PROUD of you roots, your own history.
Perhaps that's the case of Sonnen calling himself a 'gangster' and talk crap about BR, perhaps that's why he get under ppl skins so easily.
one thing i can guarantee though, the word Gangster has a whole different meaning to us, to BR standards Sonnen is more like a Playboy.
It's all about perspective.
