The purpose of the Interim Championship

I am somewhat confuse on how UFC view the Interim Champion.

To me, the purpose of a Interim Championship is to keep a Division active when the Champion will be out for a extended amount of time (e.g. GSP injury). So the Interim champion should defend the title. This will make the "title unification match" more special and meaningful since they are pitting the number 1 guy (the champion) against the (disputed) number 1 guy (the I.C champion) who proved that he can be consider as a number 1 guy too by beating the challenger just like the champion.

But looking at the Welterweight title picture, it seems like the Interim title just means number 1 contender. If that is the case, why have this "make believe" belt?

When the Dana White first announced an Interim title bout between Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz, I am all for it since this mean guy like Condit, Diaz, Fitch (pre-hendricks), and Ellenberger can compete for a Championship when GSP is out. In that case, they won't "hold out" the division.

But post Condit/Diaz bout when a reporter question a potential Condit/Ellenberger bout for the I.C title, Dana white said "If I am condit, I will take the Diaz rematch if is being offered. If not, I will wait for GSP".

This means they don't really want Condit to defend the title unless it could led to big money matches (GSP/Diaz) when Condit can defend the title at least once before GSP is ready.

In that case, why have Interim title bout when it defeat the purpose of it? Some may say it is to do a 5 rounder fight but the UFC are already doing 5 rounder for their non-title big fights.

I'm not a fan of the interim belt, unless you have to defend it. Otherwise, like you said, Condit is a glorified number one contender, and every other interim champ who sits on it until the real champ can fight, imho.

I hate the belt, it doesn't mean anything, its a piece of scrap metal for all I care. You either strip the champion of his belt, or you leave this whole business alone.

The hilarious part about Condit winning the interim belt, is that he had this speech at the end, that he worked very hard to win a belt, and went on about on the belt, like he just won the real belt.

I find it ridiculous that Hendricks thinks he can wait too. The interim champion shouldn't even be waiting for GSP, why should this douchebag try his luck doing the same thing. I honestly hope he does wait and subsequently gets left behind. The division isn't dead anymore so why hang around doing nothing?

I've come to the conclusion that interim titles exist to sell more PPVs. Anyone disagree?

Yeah, I do agree

It's a pity though because the UFC could, with very little effort, legitamize the interim belt by allowing the holder to defend it... If Condit isn't expected to defend the interim belt and is allowed to pick his opponent (which is what they are allowing him to do, if they let him wait for GSP) then the belt's ONLY purpose was to hype the Diaz/Condit fight.

The WW scene is a mess right now. I feel as if GSP should have been stripped of the belt after the 2nd injury which would have meant that Condit would be the real champ right now. Only problem is that even Carlos himself wouldn't feel as the actual champ as long as he'd fight GSP.

Still don't know why they gave him the interim belt, it has exactly 0 value.

Very nice post. I agree with everything said and the additional point that it is probably to sell ppvs.

Agreed.

"Glorified number one contender" is what summed it up perfectly for me.

GSP's injuries have really messed the division up. Not his fault at all, but it really does suck. I can't wait until GSP beats Condit, and we can resume with the normal schedule

I don't think Hendricks will wait, he'll get either Rory MacDonald or the winner of Ellenberger/Kampmann.
