UFC on FOX 3 ratings tank with 2.4 million viewers

http://www.mmamania.com/2012/5/8/300...-fox-3-ratings

While the sky isn't falling, I'm pretty sure a few umbrellas went up in the parking lot of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) headquarters in Las Vegas.

The official ratings are in for the UFC on FOX 3: "Diaz vs. Miller" event, which aired live via the network television powerhouse this past Saturday night (May 5, 2012) from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, NJ.

There's really no other way to say it. They flat-out stunk.

The final tally was 2.4 million viewers, which according to longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) reporter Loretta Hunt, was good enough for a 1.5 household rating, which equates to a 50 percent drop-off in key demographics from the UFC on FOX 2: "Evans vs. Davis" event earlier this year in Chicago, placing it sixth out of the eight programs that ran in the same time slot.

Yikes.

What the "Diaz vs. Miller" card lacked in star power, it made up for in talent. The fights delivered, but unfortunately there wasn't a marquee name to draw the casual fans in. In addition, the UFC faced stiff competition from the NBA playoffs and the "Mayweather vs. Cotto" boxing event in "Sin City."

Expect those factors to be taken into consideration as the promotion gears up for its UFC on FOX 4 event this August, currently expected to be headlined by a middleweight contender's fight between Brian Stann vs. Hector Lombard.

Stay tuned (literally).

Playoffs and the Mayweather superfight is obvious, of course this card wasn't going to break any records.

But the great news is, the card was amazing. Exciting, one exciting decision in a close fight and a ton of great stoppages (without being gross). Every casual "fan" I talked to said they would absolutely tune in to the next UFC on Fox, and a lot of them ask me to keep them updated so they make sure they don't miss it.

Ratings irrelevant right now, that card was a big step in the right direction to attracting and keeping fans.

Sucks that it did so poorly because it actually was a really strong night of fights. I enjoyed all of them and think even the casual fans would have enjoyed it. Ahh well. I think the constant rehash of fights and the lack of new big names has been slowing the progress down in the states. Just my opinion.

The good news I think is that everybody who DID watch Fox3 is going to watch Fox4 since the fights were awesome, so there's nowhere to go but up from here.

UFC needs to drop this idea that it's a "great night for fight fans" no one gives a shit about anything else when it's Mayweather or Pacquiao.

Playoffs also didn't help them any.

It's becoming obvious that they need an african-american in every main/co-main slot.

McCall, Faber, Aldo, Nate, Nick, Lyoto, TBD, Hunt
Forever hanging in Anderson Silva nuts

They did extremely well in their targeted demographic. Better, than anything else on TV. That is the demographic that Sponsors want and it is the one that pulls in the most money from advertising. It's a very expensive demo to buy in too.

It's not always about the raw number. Of course the media and the Internet love to predict the doom of things.

I'm surprised they did that well with Miller/Diaz as the main event. They're pretty much nobodies outside of the MMA world.
