Cody McKenzie to make featherweight debut against Chad Mendes at UFC 148

http://www.mmaweekly.com/cody-mckenz...irst-challenge

I didn't see this posted yet. What a difficult match up for McKenzie in his featherweight debut, fighting a guy that just fought for a title. This is a bad match up for him in my opinion. We may actually see Mendes get his first UFC finish. I expect Mendes to avoid the guillotine choke early and control McKenzie with his wrestling for a while until Cody gasses and that's when Mendes will probably get a dominant decision if not a finish.

If Cody does lose, I see him sticking around because this is kind of a mismatch ranking wise. On the other hand, if he picks up the win, that will put him on the map in the featherweight division.

Even though Mendes' skillset is leagues above that of McKenzie, i actually think this is an interesting fight purely due to the McKenzietine. Its such a unique weapen in MMA, and in last weekends fight he got it locked in pretty much when he was in guard.

Gotta go with Mendes to get a dominant win, but McKenzie's guillotine is sort of like a stand-up fighter with one-punch knockout power that could end the fight at any minute.

I'm curious to see McKenzie after spending some time at a proper gym. I feel he's had so much success with the guillotine that he's neglected the rest of his game - to his detriment at the UFC level.

Mendes trains in a camp that is probably the most famous for guillotines so am pretty sure he knows how to defend one. Mendes will throw this idiot around like a rag doll and will finish him in the first round.

Wow...

Davis goes from fighting Rashad to fighting Chad Griggs and now Chad Mendes comes off fighting for the title to fighting....Cody McKenzie....

Just baffled by some of these God-awful match ups, it's like rankings don't even exist. As for the actual fight, Mendes is gonna toss him around like a sack of potatoes.

Mendes vs. McKenzie set for UFC 148

Quote:
Former title challenger Chad Mendes (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will serve as the welcome wagon for the debut of former lightweight Cody McKenzie (13-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in the featherweight division.

UFC officials today announced that verbal agreements are in place for the 145-pound fight.

It'll be part of July's already-stacked UFC 148 lineup on Independence Day weekend.

UFC 148 takes place July 7 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view, and FX and Facebook are expected to carry the prelims. With an already-announced main card, Mendes vs. McKenzie likely will be part of the prelims.

Mendes fights for the first time since losing a title fight to featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 142. Prior to the first-round knockout, Mendes won his first 11 professional fights, including four in the WEC and two in the UFC.

The former NCAA Division I wrestling national runner-up now meets fan favorite McKenzie, who snapped a two-fight losing skid and likely saved his job with a first-round submission victory over Marcus LeVesseur earlier this week at UFC on FUEL TV 3. "The Ultimate Fighter 12" cast member used a guillotine choke for his 11th such victory in 13 career wins.

The latest UFC 148 card now includes:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)
Champ Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen (for middleweight title)
Urijah Faber vs. TBA (for interim bantamweight title)
Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz
Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le
Dong Hyun Kim vs. Demian Maia

PRELIMINARY CARD (FX)
Renan Barao vs. Ivan Menjivar
Chad Mendes vs. Cody McKenzie
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Gleison Tibau
Riki Fukuda vs. Constantinos Philippou
Fabricio Camoes vs. Melvin Guillard
John Alessio vs. Shane Roller

So - Somebody at Zuffa doesn't like McKenzie I take it?

If Mendes has to lay and pray against a potentially tired McKenzie, he may be the worst great fighter at 145. Or at least the safest. A big reason on why McKenzie has little chance at winning by submission is because of Mendes' wrestling and his lack of risk taking. He should pour it on in the later rounds where McKenzie is known to fatigue. A larger chance of that happening since this is Cody's first fight at 145 in the UFC.

Lay and pray?

NO! That's the opposite of what his gameplan should be. He should easily be able and keep it standing and completely outclass him on the feet, right? Shooting a takedown is the best way to get guillotined.
