That's the one compromise that I feel is necessary to mix in safety while still retaining the essence of combat and the sport's Vale Tudo roots.
Knees on the ground and stomps are pretty dangerous in my opinion. I love violence, but at the same time we don't need the likelihood of death in the octagon to increase.

As to the OP, I think the manager is loopy. Sounds pretty whiny because his neanderthal lost. I was pulling for Silva, but he straight up got outclassed. Gained a ton of respect for Cain after that beat down.

So ban elbows because they cause cuts, which can lead to doctor stoppages? I've never bought that argument. Any good punch / knee to the nose could cause the same damage - maybe a little tougher to pull off than a top control elbow, but too bad. The rules are the same for everyone.

As somebody mentioned, elbows provide a counter to wrist control. Could potentially be a significant advantage to BJJ fighters on their back, as they could control wrists and not worry about an elbow.

Besides, I don't know many fighters who go into a fight looking to win by doctor stoppage due to cuts. The intent for pretty much any fighter is to win by KO or submission.

Finally, if there were any newbie fans that were "turned away" by what they saw in this fight, they wouldn't have been fans for long anyway. Only a matter of time before the next bloodbath (they aren't all due to elbows), or before somebody gets their arm snapped again.

I always wanted to have Soccer kicks over Elbows. Elbows do tend to stall the action 90% of the time. Every now and then you have a Jon jones type who uses them like swords.

I could see skull fractures occurring with that sort of impact, and that's too violent.
Knees have been legal in Japan and Brazil since the dawn of Vale Tudo and the only major incident with them was when Gan McGee bonesawed into Brad Gabriel's head...but that had more to do with a massive giant of a man going against an overmatched TKD guy.

The only concession with knees to the head on the ground is obviously when there's a big weight difference between the fighters, otherwise it's just as safe as any other big strike in MMA.

Knees have been fine. Watch PRIDE. They are awesome. And they are instant KO buttons like some people seem to think....although the same probably couldn't be said for soccer kicks...

Stomps aren't really dangerous either, they are probably banned for pure asthetic reasons....it looks somewhat barbaric for a dude to stomp on another dude's head like that when he's down, and with all the human cockfighting rhetoric, they chose to ban it.

How many fights actually get stopped by doctors, how many are due to cuts, and how many specifically to cuts from elbows?

Anyone know? I can think of a few, but not many.

Some people think that they can convey either a philosophy on life or a complex political statement using a signature on the internet. I'm not one of them.

Last fight I remember being stopped was Spiritwolf vs Zaromskis but that wasn't in the UFC and the cut was caused by a punch.

And of course, historically speaking, the infamous Couture vs Belfort fight which was also caused by a grazing punch.

My thoughts exactly. If we we're getting lots of absurdly bloody fights due to elbows on the ground, then there might be an argument. But its rare. At least, rare enough for it to not be an issue right now.

His manager is a moron. I'm sure that if bigfoot could've he would've used elbows to smash Fedor's face. Forgive me if I feel it's hippocritical of him or his manager to blame his loss on elbows. And I feel that it wouldn't be fair to all the Maui Thai guys that use a lot of elbows in their striking attacks.

If all you Naysayers insist on this, maybe we should just have both fighters hogtied and the only way to win is to somehow push your opponent against the cage. Then there would be objections about homoerotisism...

Its a FCuking fight, and while fighting one should be allowed to do just that. I think there are plenty of rules as is thanks to John McCain
