Maynard files complaint about Guida's hair

Clay Guida is one of the most exciting fighters in mixed martial arts, with six "Fight of the Night" bonuses to prove it. But if you say the name "Clay Guida" the onet thing that comes to mind first for many.

The Hair.

When work began on the first UFC Undisputed game, Guida's hair kept him out of the first release (technology apparently caught up; he was added in the 2010 release).

UFC President Dana White offered him $10,000 to cut it. But The Hair stayed where it is.

Now, following a formal complaint by Gray Maynard with the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board for the UFC on FX 4 fight next Friday in Atlantic City, the hair is going to locked up, in braids.

John Fosco, Guida's manager and president of VFD Sports, on Friday told MMAjunkie.com that Maynard filed the request with the commission roughly a month ago – and that his client has decided to comply, which the New Jersey commission confirmed.

"Clay chose to avoid any distractions and simply complied," Fosco told MMAjunkie.com. "Clay will be braiding his hair back. Clay is not focused on this and has one objective: winning. Nothing will distract him from his goal."

Under the Unified Rules of MMA, individual commissions are allowed to rule on "whether head or facial hair presents any hazard to the safety of the unarmed combatant or his opponent or will interfere with the supervision and conduct of the contest or exhibition."

In the case of Maynard and Guida, Nick Lembo, counsel for the NJSACB, said a hearing was avoided when Guida agreed to Maynard's request.

"He doesn't want to do it, and I don't believe he's 100 percent happy about it, but he's being very understanding and very cooperative about it and he agreed to it," Lembo told MMAjunkie.com. "Otherwise, if he said, 'No, I'm not going to do that,' we'd have to have a hearing on it and let both sides present their case and have a commissioner's ruling on the issue."

About damn time someone forced him to braid that nasty shit.

Plus it's gonna get all nasty, sweaty and greasy I wouldn't want that shit in my mouth at all.

What's the point of that? Honestly, I think he just did it to distract Clay from the fight a little.
I agree with both of you and it could backfire on Gray.

Long hair makes it easier for your opponent to control your head. makes it harder to escape chokes. interferes with your vision and your breathing.

Ever notice how many times Clay wipes it out of his face in a fight? We might see a new and improved carpenter.

A neighbor of mine who fought in England can't even remember his name told me he use to not shower and shave before his fights...JUST to annoy his opponents. There's many cases of this apparently; Fitch, Matt Lindland, etc. It's nasty shiet and it would piss me off to no end...lolz!

True story.

Got a good laugh at this though...haha!

IMO it poses more of a distraction to Clay than anyone else.

Bunch of god damn metro sexuals. Who cares? Its hair. If he wants to fight with long hair let him. If guys are fighting with banned substances I doubt a little hair is gonna really give him that edge over the competition or give someone else an edge. I like gray but damn I kinda see him being a bit of a ***** about this.

I think its a bad idea one thing I always thought was the hair amplified the look when Clay got hit, because of the hair it always looked like he got hit harder since the hair is swinging around. I think it creates an illusion of damage.

YES!! surely it must make an impression on the judges. Guida has erratic head movement and his hair always flails around. Also at times when he slips big punches, his hair makes it look like he got tagged. Only watching the slow motion replay, you can see him evading these particular strikes.

Gray should have asked before signing to fight, but really I don't care.

Braided or short hair as a standard is fine by me - I think big hair that moves around a lot can be a distraction and can make it harder to judge where the guys chin is, so I'd be okay with the commission making some kinda rule on it.

I personally don't know why anyone would wanna fight with long hair it would annoy the hell outta me

MMAJunkie.com posted an update on the article, turns out Gray didn't even file the complaint, his camp did.

This is absolutely retarded! Good on Clay for just doing what needs to be done to avoid unnecessary issues. I've never cared much for Gray and his attitude this only amplifies that.

Admittedly I'm probably a little biased seeing as how my hair is at my shoulders. Just like it was during my short stint as kickboxer, and my even shorter stint as a mixed martial artist... neither of which did it hinder me at all by the way.
