Because of the injuries that have plagued this card, it probably has the lowest draw for any recent PPV. Prior to the injuries you had:
Aldo vs Koch (Aldo out)
Silva vs Shogun (both out)
Bisping vs Boestch (Bisping out)
Akiyama vs Alves (Both out)
Kongo vs Nog (Nog out)
Delorme vs Fernandes (Fernandes wasn't officially signed)
I was looking forward to many of these fights. Now realistically for this card, Faber is the only big draw for this card with Kongo and Lombard to a lesser extent. Personally I'll watch the card because I love MMA but I know if I was a casual fan and spent hundreds of dollars on tickets to the first UFC in Alberta I would be pissed. Is there anything that can be done for the card and does the UFC owe the fans anything?
(Also don't want to jinx it but a lot wrong can happen in a month until July 21)
Faber/Barao is actually a better fight than Aldo/Koch, Aldo is better than Faber but let's be real, Aldo/Koch wasn't gonna be competitive at all, Faber/Barao will be a hell of a fight and Lombard/Boestch? That fight will be nothing but violent while it lasts.
Injuries happen and it sucks but there's nothing they can do to save the card, I don't understand why Shogun was taken off the card though and put on FOX when they have Machida/Bader on there. If PPV buys are any indication Machida is a much bigger draw then Shogun is. Shogun could have been left on the card and they could have done Shogun/Vera as the 149 co-main event.
Like 147? I'm not even going out to a bar to watch it or even taking the time to stream it. This is the first card I'm just skipping in a LOOOONNNGGG time.
At the end of the day, the injuries benefit the young, hungry up-and-comers. I'm still intruiged to see the names I don't recognise as these are the potential stars of tomorrow. Eager to impress and put on the best/most memorable fights they can.
I think it's a bit quick to write off a card until people see it. It can't be judged on face value, you could have all the PPV-stars in the world, and they can still produce a stinker of a fight.
Well...it's more of a general realisation really, lot of MMA peeps on different forums complaining about the card and the standard of the fights before they've even seen them, but yeah it's not worth the PPV price i guess
Yeah also I agree with you that it'd still be a good watch and the fights are still competitive looking and exciting, but I also agree with Life B Ez that it's not worth the money.
I mean I can get exciting, competitive, up-and-comer type fights for free on Bellator or any of the dozens of regional / smaller shows. The reason people shell out $65 is to see the very best of the best in the world, and those are simply lacking on this card and many of the recent ones.
People can look down "star power" and deride you for being a casual fan all they want, but the only reason they themselves watch the UFC over smaller, free orgs is that it has the top 10 fighters and not just journeyman like every other show.
I will be watching them as well. Not concerned with the lack of star power at all. Good fights are worth the money.
