UFC and Boxing

Okay before you judge me for posting "another" UFC vs. Boxing thread...read what I have to say.

I am a VERY avid sports fan, I like almost every main stream sport, football (american), baseball, hockey, basketball, boxing, mixed martial arts, soccer, golf, even some tennis.

After the Pacquiao/Bradley fight, a broadcaster on ESPN's Sportsrise made a statement that kind of got me wondering.

If I could find the video I would post it but he said "Boxing on its worst day is still better than MMA on its best"

With that said, do you believe that is true? And if you believe its true right now, do you ever think we will see a day where MMA becomes better than boxing?

Leave out the biased opinions, I am not just talking about fans. I am talking about promotional aspects, fans, fighters, and more importantly money. Will the UFC ever pay as much or more than pro boxing?

Kinda hard to leave out biased opinions in a heated debate like this, but in my opinion, this was a nail in the coffin for boxing.

I have ordered almost every major (you know, pac man, oscar, mayweather, k bros) boxing ppv for the last 5 years with my friends, around the time when I became an mma fan. I think we are all done. We all found mma way more exciting in the first place, and then to witness the travesty that was pac man and Bradley...I think for a lot of us trying to get in to the sport that was the straw that broke the camels back.

Just so disgustingly corrupt.

I agree. I think this definitely has started the downfall. Like you I am also a boxing fan...but find MMA way more entertaining..and to me its only a matter of time.

But really, Boxing on its "WORST" day is STILL better than MMA on its "BEST" day? How true is this statement?

ESPN is a bunch of fossils that don't understand MMA, they think shit like Horseracing is entertaining, that's the main problem ESPN is about as pro-boxing and anti-MMA as it gets. The sooner those old people are gone the better.

And no Boxing is not better than MMA on any day, Boxing has 100 million weight classes and promotions and Boxing doesn't give people the fights they wanna see either. The UFC has gave or atleast tried to give us GSP/Diaz, Lesnar/Overeem, JDS/Overeem, Silva/Sonnen 2, and Jones/Evans just to name a few, the one fight everyone in Boxing wants to see hasn't happened and it should have happened 2 years ago.

Boxing is a fun sport but the politics involved in it have absolutely destroyed it.

I agree with you, when it comes to fans the UFC and MMA as a whole definitely cares more about the fans. But when it comes to money, when will MMA or the UFC ever surpass pro boxing? If ever? and I somewhat disagree with you on the old fossils and ESPN being anti-mma..They do talk about MMA and even have Jon Jones in their intro for Sportscenter mon-fri at 5am (i watch it when i get up for work)..

If you're going to base the boxing part on one fight, then I think the fairest comparison to MMA is Silva/GSP. That is the one fight everyone in MMA wants to see and it's not likely to ever happen.

Silva/GSP is probably the biggest fight that could be made in MMA but it's more fantasy than reality. They both fight in separate divisions where Pacquiao and Mayweather do fight in the same division. Plus it's not like the sport of MMA is dependent on that one fight like Boxing is with there's, there's plenty of other big superfights from MMA people wanna see, in Boxing, not so much. That fight got talked about a lot but mostly when GSP and Anderson had their divisions cleared out now GSP has Condit, Kampmann, Hendricks, and maybe Diaz and Anderson has Sonnen, Munoz, Weidman, Shields, Boestch, and Lombard.

I enjoy a good boxing match but don't think it holds a candle to an MMA match. To me boxing is like 1/2 a sport. Or, probably more accurately, a 1/4 of a sport. A "fighting" sport where you can't kick, elbow, grapple, throw or submit? Why not set up a basketball game where you can't dribble, pass or dunk while you're at it.

I'm not hammering boxing too hard because again I enjoy a good boxing match. I think boxing is far more a sport and far less of a fight than MMA. MMA is definitely not an all out fight (no headbutts, gouging, etc.) but it's closer and therefore more entertaining to me in that regard.

Just my 2 cents.

MMA is better. It has everything that boxing offers plus a lot more.

Boxing is okay but I don't get excited for it and never order the PPV

You are aware that those two guys fight in two different weight classes¿ If they were in the same weight class they would have already fought a long time ago. The fight between those two is in not at all comparable to Pacquiao vs. Mayweather who just don't get their negociation right.

As for boxing vs. MMA. MMA is still a pretty young sport and not really known outside the US, Brazil, Japan and maybe Canada. You can go at almost any place in the world and when asking any average guy on the street to name a boxer he will come up with Ali, Tyson and the likes. When doing the same with MMAm the average guy probably won't even know what MMA is or would still have that image of "that barbaric fighting with no rules". But the UFC has done a lot for MMA. In the US it's growing more and more popular and with time it may also in the rest of the world.
