Suspended UFC Star Alistair Overeem Begins Own Drug Testing Program
Quote:
Suspended UFC Heavyweight Alistair Overeem broke his silence two months into his suspension for elevated testosterone levels last night on UFC Tonight. Overeem was scheduled to fight for the UFC HW title against Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 but had to bow out of that fight to start serving his suspension.
Here's what he told UFC Tonight (transcribed by MMA Fighting):
"When I had the positive test result, I didn't know why that was and I didn't want to talk about something that I didn't know about," said Overeem, who was speaking via satellite from Davie, Fla. "By the time we researched it, I had just gotten out of this situation in front of the commission. To avoid, if we were going to do all the questions which come from the media, that's not going to solve the situation, especially if you didn't know where it comes from or what you're talking about.
"I didn't think that was the right thing to do. So we decided to do research, stay quiet, when we did have the research done we went in front of the commission and we explained our side of the story."
He also spoke about UFC president Dana White and explained his new independent drug testing schedule. You can read all that after the jump...
"I have not spoken to Dana personally," he said. "I mean, Dana is a busy man, he's got a company to run and fans to take care of. Basically, I respect Dana, I'm going to convince Dana through my actions I am a legit fighter and do the random tests. I'm very sure that this situation cannot happen again.
"What I want to show the world is that I am a clean fighter, I'll do these tests on my own. One test doesn't say anything. If I do these tests every 3-4 weeks, then you prove to everyone that you are clean, the medical staff is observing you taking the test, so there's no foul play involved. ... What I'm hoping to acheive is that I can prove to the world that I ama clean fighter. I'm doing it for myself as well as for the fans. For me, myself, my fans, for the commission, I am a clean fighter."

Nope, not going to work on me. We know that you can do TRT and never pop positive. As far as I am concerned the man roided up and hid in areas that didn't do testing and would come back "clean" just in time for his fight. The first time he actually submits to a surprise drug test he is busted. I'm not an Overeem hater, but I long suspected his was Overoid as suggested.

This is going to be as credible as Vince McMahon overseeing drug testing for his WWE Wrestlers.

I love the Reem, but man, kinda surprised he even went the "casual side-swipe excuse" route. Almost like "guys, guys, it was a mistake, I will test myself from here on out to make sure i'm not over!".
Might have been easier to just apologize and say it was a training injury. That seems to fool most people.

If I apply for a job that does drug tests and I tell them that I'll provide my own tests and results... They'll laugh me out of the ******* building.

I really like overeem but this is kinda silly. Just pass the randoms and all will be ok, just stay clean and lay low a while..

Where's the credibility in this coming from? If he really wanted to do more testing why not just go through the VADA like everyone else.

I took from it that he will take initiative to get checked from a recognised, independent testing facility on a regular basis.
If he does this every 3-4 weeks with clean results, I think he'll recover most of his credibility over the next year.

Yeah, it obviously has to be a valid third party doing the testing or else it's a joke, if it is valid testing I think it's a good thing for him, monthly tests for the next year or so should prove he doesn't use assuming you can't cycle in a month. I think every fighter who fails a test should be submitted to this actually.

It would still mean nothing, literally. He can cycle smaller doses and since he knows when the tests are going to be he will always come out clean. No, you really want to earn my confidence? Test him randomly 4 days after "he tests himself clean".
I appreciate what he is trying to do, but it doesn't matter. At this point he should try to move on and just understand that the only way he gains confidence is to never get popped above 2-1 ratios or so. Anything higher than that, 6 - 1 is legal, means he is still juicing to me.
