UFC 148 - Sports Fraud of the Year
Sonnen was paid 500.000$ from Dana White and Fertitta brothers to promote the fight with thrash talking, payperview and more, but most important to lose the fight on purpose in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Here’s what went down under closed doors leading up to the fight…
Lorenzo: Chael, you’re a business man. I’m a business man, it’s no secret this fight is one of the biggest in UFC history and if we promote it right we can earn big on this one.
Dana: That’s why we called you in to discuss some things, if you do what you’re best at, which is thrash talking and promote the payperview, we will offer you something in return, a half million dollars.
Chael: Ok, I’m listening…
Lorenzo : But that’s not all…. You’ll have to lose the fight also, because Anderson Silva is too important to the company, he’s the biggest icon of the sport and without him we will lose a lot of publicity and money.
Dana: So here’s the deal. You give all what you’ve got round 1, don’t spare the energy and worrying about gassing out because you’ll have to lose in the 2nd or 3rd round, which is your job to figure out how… I’m thinking something like a slow spinning backfist or something, cos we all know his head movement are too fast and it’s 90%, he’ll avoid a strike like that.
Chael: Hmm, I could try figure something out.
Dana: In return for this favor, we will give you 500.000$ plus a rubber match with Silva, if you do well in your next 2-3 fights.
Chael: Ok I’m in.
I have been watching UFC since 2005, and that spinning/stumble move is the most amateur I have seen in years and wouldn’t come from a fighter like Sonnen not at this stage only round 2, and when he’s on the ground he’s not even wounded he just stumbled, sits there like a good little bitch and wait for Silva’s knee strike. This was so fake and obviously a set up from Sonnen.
Also after the fight Sonnen stands up right away walks around like nothing happened, don’t tell me that knee strike inflicted so much damage Sonnen couldn’t intelligent defend himself or try even harder to get out of those padding finishing strikes from Silva.
Really it's all about money, and UFC is no different, unfortunately this one is more than obvious… if you think about it how Sonnen thrash talked before the fight, said “… only on payperview” in every interview leading up to the fight, and after the fight almost apologises to Silva.
He did a helluva good job on promoting the fight and not destroy the record of the biggest icon of UFC, but the truth is he was paid to do it and White and Fertitta knew they could trust in him since Sonnen had been involved in money laundry etc. recently.
