The difference between Big John, Herb and Mazagatti is that he isn't as unsure in his calls as they are. Not saying their not, but if you notice in some of their fights, they are unsure of their calls and are about to stop it and don't all of a sudden, or they stop it much too soon. Big John seems very confident in his decisions right or wrong.

I don't see how he is overrated as a ref. I've never seen him make a real terrible call. But he definitely gets more coverage than other refs simply because he is a fan favorite and has been around forever.

I like Big John, but this does remind me of something I noticed with the Couture Silvia fight

It appeared as though Big John was coaching Randy to put his knee on the mat so Silvia wouldn't be able to knee him in the head.
Did anyone else notice that?

I didn't like that..

Big John is really good at his job, and if you actually watch the fights carefully(in this case the reffing particulary) he is very very good at it. He is easily the best MMA ref, with second place going to Herb Dean.

Big John is a good ref because he keeps a close eye on the fight and the fighters. He is quick to spot an illegal blow and steps right in to stop the action, warn the one, and give the other time to recoup. If a fighter spits out his mouth piece, he doesn't stop the action to get it cleaned and put back in, he waits for a lull in the action. He's constantly communicationg with the fighters, letting them know he's gonna break it up or stand them up if they don't get busy. or tell them he's gonna stop it if you don't defend yourself. He's experienced enough to know when a fighter is looking for a way out and yes, will stop that fight sooner than someone he knows will want to brawl it out. But even with that, if a man is overwhlmed he jumps in immediately. Shamyrock and Tito 2. He didn't stop that fight too soon. Shamy was out on the way down and couldn't even put his hands in any kind of position to defend himself and took several (4 or 5) big shots to the head before he got it stopped. In addition, he controls the octagon which is what a ref should do. He is not intimidated by any of these fighters or their corners. He don't take any BS from them. When he says get in your corner, he means it. Big John has made mistakes, but they are few and far between. No one's perfect. I could probably ramble on for another 500+ words on what makes big john a good ref but this is good enuff before breakfast ...

At that point, Big John was advising that knees to the head were not a legal shot at that moment. He anticipated a potential knee to the head and acted on it to help the fighters avoid the situation. No coaching, just good refereeing.

Are you sure? At that point Couture was standing on his feet and immediately after John said watch out he put his knee down. That's how I remember it

Knees are only illegal against a downed opponent, yes?
