Frank Mir Talks Fighting Daniel Cormier And TRT

Quote:

Last month, it was announced that for the first time ever a UFC fighter would make the transition over to the struggling Strikeforce promotion. Daniel Cormier, the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion, was in desperate need of a fresh opponent. For a short while, former UFC champion Tim Sylvia's name was floated, but finally it was announced that Frank Mir would fight the former Olympian. While Cormier seemed mostly focused on getting a high profile fight, Mir is focusing on the more strategic aspects of the fight.

The MMA Hour was able to get ahold of the two-time former UFC champion on Tuesday (via MMA Fighting)

I still feel that I have to pick his game apart. I think that if we fight each other, I'd have the advantage in striking and submissions, but as far as whether the fight stays on the feet or goes down, I don't think I'm going to have much of a choice. Wherever he wants to fight me, I'm going to have to be prepared for all areas.

His wrestling is light years ahead of what mine is, even on my best day and his worst.

In Mir's last fight, he suffered brutal knock out loss to UFC Heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos as a late replacement for Alistair Overeem at UFC 146. However, to some, the biggest news to come out of that fight was Mir being granted a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). TRT has become a hot button issue in MMA in recent years. Since athletic commissions seem to be somewhat relaxed about granting exemptions, more and more fighters have been picking up the treatment including other veterans like Forrest Griffin and Rampage Jackson. Mir spoke on his experience with the therapy:

As far as performance in the gym I couldn't tell you the difference. But as far as the areas of my health where I was starting to have issues -- as far as that goes, that gets too personal -- but I probably will always stay on this

So, unlike Nate Marquardt who recently discontinued his testosterone treatment, it looks like Mir will proceed with it into his bout with Daniel Cormier. The two will meet on September 29 in Sacramento, CA at the Power Balance Pavilion. The event will also feature Gilbert Melendez defending his Lightweight title against Pat Healy.

There's only three fighters I'd say would beat Cormier (Dos Santos, Velasquez, and Overeem) and while Mir should do much better against Cormier than Barnett did, I think Cormier has this by TKO/UD.

vBookie Record: 16-9

Kinda agree. I see only Overeem and JDS having a chance against DC. And the bolded part, i agree with. Mir is more dangerous but easier to put away.

^^^This, except I feel Cormier would be a really bad matchup for Velasquez as he would neutralize his strength and wrestling. But I am a Cormier fan and want to see him go on a tear.

I actually think Barnett is an overall better fighter than Mir, while Mir is a more dangerous fighter. I'm not sure he'll do better than Barnett. Cormier couldn't/didn't put him away cuz he was game all the way to the end. We all know Barnett's game plan is to take down and overwhelm the opponent. Mir has knocked out two opponents pretty much.

I think Cormier has to play the clinching game and sap Mir's strength then eventually take him down and CAREFULLY GNP em to a TKO. This is going to be a very interesting matchup because I think Cormier may just circle around while Mir plods forward. Unless Cormier gets the TKO I think it might be a bit of a snooze fest. It's evident that Cormier's striking game is fairly rudimentary still while his wrestling game is probably the best in MMA.

I dunno I just feel that Cormier will fight not to lose and Mir will just keep pushing the pace. Problem is I know Cormier can end it if he decides to engage fully.

I kinda favor Cormier, but Mir is one of those guys I would hardly ever bet against.

Kinda curious as to what his health problems are, I'm sure ROFLCopter will come in here spouting his "he was on steroids" bullshit but if these guys are having health problems that are too personal to talk about and need some medicine to treat them, I wonder if they should be fighting in a cage.
