I think some people look at his like some rec sports thing were you can look out for #1 but the UFC is a buisiness and these guys are employee's. In peoples regular lives how many times does your boss ask you to do the company a favor and go above and beyond your regular duties or hours? I know personally it happens often and your know what most people step up and help out because that's how you get ahead in life. Maybe some fighters need a blue collar work ethic.
Well, actually you couldn't be more wrong. They are not employees of the UFC, they are self employed Sub Contractors basically.

They need to look out for themselve and their own best interest, because if they were to go on a 3-4 fight loosing streak, Dana would cut them in a heartbeat.
So they are looking out for their own future and their own longevity.

We can all sit back and slam these guys for not taking fights and doing what we think they should "As if they are just pawns on a chess board".
But the reality is, these are real guys, just like you and me and they need to make decisions that are best for them, not what's best for your enjoyment or for other fighter's careers.

Everyone keeps talking about 'If your boss asks you to do something, you do it" WTF, they are not slaves. They are independent fighters. Not only that, I would have no problem quitting a job if my boss asked me to do something I felt was not in my best interest.

At the end of the day and the end of a career. The only one these fighters need to look out for is themself.

Where will you be when their career is at it's end and they can no longer fight because of age and abuse. Will you start sending them money just because they stepped up and took a fight on short notice 5 years earlier? Hell no, you will only be interested in the next best talent that has arrived on the scene.

I have no problem with Machida declining the fight. He would have accepted it had he more time. If Machida just finished a full training camp and was declining this fight then i would have a problem with it. But to give Jon Jones 4 months to prepare for a fight and Machida 28 days is not fair to Machida. Who if he loses wont get a title shot for a very long time. Even if this was a favor to the UFC.

Machida has to be hoping that Jones loses so he doesn't have to fight him again.

One thing that worries me as a Machida fan is how long it could take to see his next fight. Already he doesn't fight much each year, but it could be a long time if he waits it out for a title fight.

I'd imagine that after the Jones-Belfort fight, Hendo is still next in line

Dear dana, 6 words of truth. I am afraid I would lose.

I merely was showing how the you scratch my back/we scratch yours thing is supposed to work.

The UFC kept Dan Miller when he went 0-3 and I am convinced he could have went 0-6 and been kept around because he consistently came to the rescue. When your looking at your career doing your employer favors gives your more leverage when he comes to reevaluate your wage.

No I get annoyed because like I said myself and how many regular people go above and beyond every day and yet these diva's act like the UFC has no right to ask them to do things like this. Man up that is how life works sometimes.

That is were we differ I play I scratch your back you scratch mine all the time and that is what makes it in my best interest. The favor I earn with the people who look after my paycheck is my reward cause what goes around comes around.

And were will Machida be when after Vitor, Hendo gets his shot? On the sidelines? Then either Gustafsson or Glover will likely get a shot, hell now we are at the middle of 2013 and somebody like Phil Davis will likely have worked his way up because lets be honest Machida as a contender is a fight very few people want to see and the UFC know it, he and Shogun were only considered as space fillers for Jones to crush till the new contenders could rise up. Machida has just waved his shot good bye and I really don't expect him to get it now.

I am sure that Machida would of fully accepted the title shot if it was his first fight against Jones. Machida has already fought Jones for the title and lost. Coming into a second fight with Jones having a training and preparation disadvantage could end Lyoto at LHW if he lost again.
We saw this with Franklin at MW who lost to Silva twice and earnt a third title shot that couldnt happen.

I can fully understand Machida making this decision with his circumstances.
