He got absolutely destroyed the entire fight. Owned in every aspect. He is unfortunate if he has to fight Jones again.

My exact thoughts. Shogun wasn't unfortunate, he just met the worst possible matchup for him and his style. At least he is in good company as apparently Jones is the worst possible matchup for everyone and their style.

While I think Jones beats Shogun in almost every example I can think of, the Shogun in Jones vs. Shogun did not look like himself.
He always looks terrible after surgery, and then much better in his second fight - weird

Everybody affirming Jones is better than Shogun in his prime is just new to the game and unaware of the dire battles he's been in the past, against warriors Jones never ever faced in his life.

Has Shogun faced a fighter quite like Jon Jones in the past? Nope. Jones is just a stylistic nightmare to most of the guys in the division.

All the circumstances leading up to the fight were negative for Rua, but the fight is the only part people will remember, it's the only part that matters when looking through the history books.
Bad time for Shogun, I remember Dana's little speech at the pre-fight conference, 'No matter what happens tomorrow night, Shogun is one of the nastiest fighters the sport has seen and will always be a legend...etc.' He knew Shogun was in a bad spot, but the show must go on.
Just watch the way he came out with a looping right hand, he wanted to finish that fight ASAP. At least he turned up, that's more than can be said for Jon right now.

The best Shogun ever wouldn't beat Jones.

When I think of unfortunate, I think of one costly mistake (like Sonnen both times against Silva). Jones destroying Shogun for three rounds was unfortunate for Shogun's face following the fight. I don't buy the whole "healthy Shogun BS". Could Shogun have better prepared for the fight? Probably. But that's his fault as a fighter.

I remember the battles, I remember when Coleman beat him through an unusual injury and being upset. I remember thinking no one would ever beat him, and thinking that if him and Chuck ever met up I knew how it was going to go down.
Ultimately what we are all affirming is what is true about all sports. Newer, more evolved and specialized are better than older generations. Athletes who play Soccer (futbol), football, hockey, basketball, etc, that play now are almost 100% likely to be better than their counterparts 25-30 years ago. Well MMA is like that, but we are going from guys that started training after their first few fights to guys that have trained for years before their first fight. The evolution is happening faster in MMA right now.

The only thing unfortunate about shogun is we never really got to see what he could become because of all the knee injuries. The guy could have been a phenom when he first came from pride if he could have just stayed healthy.
