Anderson Silva: “Even if St-Pierre loses a fight with me can happen.”

Quote:

With news finally surfacing stating UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre has been cleared to return to competition it looks like his November date with interim title-holder Carlos Condit is a certainty barring unforeseen circumstances. It also appears a future meeting with Anderson Silva is set in stone, at least if “The Spider” has his say in the matter.
When asked about the possibility of facing GSP during a recent conversation with SporTV, Silva not only put the pairing on a pedestal above all other potential fights but said he’d be open to the match-up no matter what happens in St-Pierre’s fall meeting with Condit.
“Regardless of who wins, even if St-Pierre loses, a fight with me can happen. A fight like this is above anything else. St-Pierre is one of the greatest of the UFC. Right now, a fight with Condit is meaningless,” commented Silva (translation by Bloody Elbow).
The response from Silva seems to confirm the 37-year old is in the market for the biggest bouts possible rather than defending his title against worthy yet lesser-known contenders. The two longtime champions have been linked to a super-fight for a few years. Combined St-Pierre and Silva have compiled sixteen total title-defenses between them and won 25 consecutive clashes.

I'm fairly positive we won't be stripped of this fight.

Eh.. I think the fight shouldn't happen if Condit gets the win, simply because the magic of it would be gone. You can't have the former champion fight the champion of the next weight class up RIGHT after he loses his title.

I think the same way going down in weight, which is why I disagree with Frankie Edgar getting a title shot when he moves down. (I love Frankie, but he should have to earn it.)

I still hope they make that 176 (178?) catchweight. Would be fair and square.

Don't worry, our favorite French-Canadian is going to beat that ass.

I would say the size advantage from Silva to GSP is almost as much as from Silva to Jones, who will be fighting as HW in the future. That would play a lot in an eventual match. Anderson fought as a welterweight long time ago. To drop now close to 40's would be a great sacrifice.

I somewhat agree with this. It would be about as relevant as if Pacquiao fought Mayweather.

But I would still like to see the fight. Because win or lose, GSP as solidified himself as one of the all-time greats, and I would still enjoy seeing two giants of the sport go at it.

When Condit beats GSP this fight will be a very hard sell. Although it is funny to hear AS say he still wants it, because the moment Fedor lost Couture was like, "Whatever man, why didn't I get a chance to beat him?"

Hopefully Condit wins; I really think he can. If he does win though, then some of the magic is gone. Don't get me wrong, I would still love to see this fight, but some of the aura would be gone.

Think about say, Brock/Fedor. If that fight happened after UFC 100 it would be by far the biggest fight in MMA history. But if they did it after Werdum beat Fedor or Cain beat Brock, people would still want to see it badly, but a lot of the mystique would be gone.

Looks like they really want this fight. The UFC would be nuts not to make this fight. Even if GSP loses, as long as it isn't a finish, they could still sell the fight. Even if it loses a little luster, the PPV rate would go down from 1.5 million to about 1.2 million. It would still be one of the best selling events ever. GSP will win though. Don't see how Condit can win besides a flash KO.

Personally I have never been, and I still am not interested in a GSP/Silva fight. GSP is very good at what he does, but I just don't put him on th pedestal that Anderson Silva sits on. I'm much more interested in Jon Jones and Silva. I'm also a huge Carlos Condit fan so I'm hoping Condit picks up the win, removing the hype from Sylva/GPS... let Silva destroy Weindman... then have him fight Jones after Jones beats Vitor and possibly Lyoto again (I hated saying that very last part).
