Dan Henderson: Chael might have done okay in the first.

Quote:
Seasoned scrapper Dan Henderson has the utmost respect for Chael Sonnen. The two have worked closely together for years and spilled buckets of sweat alongside one another at the Team Quest training center. That being said Henderson is also a realist who has a good mind for MMA given his extensive experience with the sport and is rarely if ever afraid to offer up an honest opinion.
On that note, Henderson was recently asked about Sonnen’s chances against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones without a proper camp in place, as would have been the case this weekend had “Bones” accepted a proposed bout with Sonnen in place of the injured Henderson, and responded on the matter without a hint of bias involved.
“Chael might’ve done okay in the first round, maybe take Jon Jones down and then probably run out of gas pretty quickly,” said Henderson on The MMA Hour. “Being out of shape, for Chael to take Jon Jones down would require probably a little more energy than to bounce around the cage and exchange punches with him. So I think he definitely would’ve needed a little bit more gas than sitting on the couch for six weeks would give him.”
The former PRIDE/Strikeforce title-holder also dismissed the idea he’d informed Sonnen about the status of his injured knee weeks before telling the UFC as a way to let Sonnen start prepping for a potential go at Jones.
“My guys told me that (Jones’ coach) said in an interview that Chael was down training with me and getting ready for the fight and knew I was hurt. It was nothing like that at all. He wasn’t even down here. I asked him if he wanted to come down and help me train a couple months ago, but he didn’t come down,” explained Henderson.
Though sidelined for an undetermined amount of time while healing up from a torn MCL, Henderson has remained hopeful he’ll still get his shot at Jones – or potentially Vitor Belfort depending on how he fares against the champ in a few weeks – before the calendar rolls over into 2013.
“Whatever I need to do, I just want to fight,” stated Henderson frankly. “I think myself and the fans would like to see me have that title fight, especially against Jon Jones, the fight everyone was kind of hoping to see. We’ll see what happens, but I just want to get back in there and fight.”

Bingo..

There is no way Chael could have won a 5 round fight against Jones without a training camp and 8 days notice. I would never favor Chael over Jones but given the circumstances i would have given Chael 5-10% chance to win the fight. If he had a full training camp it probably goes up to 20% imho.

I wonder how Jones is off his back. Have we ever seen him there??? I recall him getting a jumping triangle on Rampage but that was near the end of the round. I dont think we have ever seen him really on his back.

I've obviously never trained at the level of these guys but are they really that out of shape when their not on a fight camp.. Like training camp gives you extra 4 rounds full of gas?

OP i hate when people say 'I'd give such and such a something percent chance'. I don't know where you get these numbers from and how you work them but if there is a system can someone send me the memo.

Here's something I've always thought and yet to know anyone who has the same opinion. Everyone knows the champ. Everyone knows his style and is always working up to one day fight him. I've got to think that without preparation, Chael still has a solid idea of how Jones fights. I'd have to think that Chael was a lot better prepared to fight on eight days notice than people would think, bar his fitness.

Compared to an average man Chael is in top condition all year round, in camp or not. But without a doubt a 6-7-8 week long training camp does wonders for your gas tank. When you train like a madman for an extended period of time, and then rest for 4-5 days, that's as good as you'll ever feel physically and will be the thing that keeps your hands up in the fifth round when you otherwise couldn't.

Alot of it is mental. If you dont think you are in shape then thats going to show come fight time.

But yeah tbh i think so. When im working out i can probably run 5 miles at a pretty decent pace. I take 2-3 weeks off and im barely doing 2 miles. And fighting is much more intense then running. Iv been in a couple fights and i always get surprised how quickly my arms fade. I think thats something that really gets improved in a hard 3 month training camp. I mean everything is ment for these guys to peak during fight time.

Why do you hate that?? Its not based off a system. Its based of my opinion what i think the chances are for Chael to implement his game plan which is grinding out a decision win and what the chances are for Jones to implement his which has a much larger variety of ways to finish and more instant.

I dont consider my percentage to be written in stone or something. But i also dont think im too far off based on all the fights i have seen. But this is MMA and i could very well be completely wrong.

So dont hate such silly things. Im sure you have an opinion on who you think is going to win and why.

I'm no fighter, no athlete or whatever, but as far as I know, the training camp is of course training, but also a specific diet and whatnot that the fighters may not follow to the letter on their off time.

this may also play a huge role in conditioning a fighter for a big fight.

I admit it I have no idea of what I'm talking about here, but I'm guessing 3 months of eating pizzas will not have the same results as 3 months eating boiled vegetables, beans and supplement pills or that crazy stuff they're eating when they train. I've seen a GSP vid where he eats some sort of shark cartilage thing, I mean yea, that has to have some effect too I guess.

For those of us who have never trained, I have a suggestion.

Put on some gloves and attack a heavy bag. Preferably one of those soft kickbox fitness bags that won't hurt your hands. Attack for 1 five minute round. when you can't throw anymore punches or kicks just grab the bag and rassle it around.

I guarantee the bag wins. If you last the full 5 minutes, you done good.

Now, multiply the intensity of that workout by 10 and you have a good hard sparring round.

Multiply that sparring round by some factor and you get the intensity of a fight.

A 5 minute fight would kill some people.
