UFC 151: Source Says Jon Jones Almost Paid The Fighters Their Purses
Yesterday, ESPN's MMA Live focused on the topic of the UFC 151 cancellation and where the blame for it might lie. There was an interesting nugget in it that made me take pause. According to Franklin McNeil, a reliable source close to the situation said that Jon Jones was willing to pay the fighters from the card their purses. Unfortunately, that good will was hampered by a condition. You weren't allowed to voice your opinion about the situation if it wasn't a favorable one. These days, charitable moments have sub-clauses. Due to multiple fighters speaking out against Jones, he decided to change his mind and not pay out the fighters. This whole UFC 151 cancellation has pulled me in two directions. I fully understand and support Jones on his decision to not take a last minute fight. Chael Sonnen is an elite competitor, and that's a hell of a risk to take with your title. However, the fan in me would have been 100x more dedicated to Jones' future endeavors had he stepped up to the plate and met the challenge. What bothers me here, is that when things like this leak out, it doesn't do him any favors. This is akin to his backhanded apology tweet. I almost helped a lady across the street but decided not to because she didn't ask nicely. See what I did there? To me, it defeats the spirit of a good will gesture when it's conditional. Catch the clip of the show and some quotes after the jump.

Bah, after the crap they started talking I would have changed my mind as well.

He did the right thing in the end.
Their critizising him, blaming him for losing their money and he should pay them back after getting dissed like this?

I almost sold all my possessions to go and live in a kibbutz once. Almost.
Kind of a silly thing to say really.

So Jon Jones screws up a card and is willing to pay the fighters their purses but he decides against it because some fighters expressed their disappointment. Wow, what a fragile ego.

The UFC almost paid them as well, if JJ just hadn't backed out.

Jones desperately needs better/smarter PR people around him. Honestly, if he came out and said "f#ck everybody, it's my life, my choice", he would be in a better position PR wise.
This passive Greg Jackson bullsh!t approach leaves him open to bullying from anybody including lame mediocre fighters like Brenamann.
The only reason I'm shocked by Jones' decision is because of the money he could have made by fighting Sonnen. He could have easily requested a $1 million bonus in addition to his regular pay.

So he would have paid them as long as they promised in writing not to talk about how much of a bitch he was being... and then later told the whole world that he would have helped these men pay their bills that they cannot because of his decision except that they were critical of him...
At this point I don't give a **** how good of a fighter he is I am done with Jon Jones. This is too much bitchery. It is a veritable Black Mass celebrating the furthest depths of his bitchcraft. He is an amazingly talented competitor but he is also the biggest whining, condescending, hypocritical bitch in mma.

It´s not Jones fault that the UFC planned a event so bad, that didn't even had a decent co-main...
This all fiasco is all UFC fault to carry, people should back away form Bones back cause the kid just did the best for him and his career.

They had a good co-main event. Ellenberger vs Koscheck. Kos got injured. Jones knew that event was riding on him and he said **** it. He's supposed to be a fighter. Fighter's fight. Not spend all of their time whining about unfair everyone is being or comparing the situation to Pearl Harbor or publicly unfriending their boss on Twitter. He is a bitch. His choice was his to make but his actions since are pure whole hearted bitch.
