GSP & Spider fight not happening anytime soon

Georges St-Pierre Wants to Conquer Welterweight Division Before Fathoming Anderson Silva Fight

Quote:

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will return to action after more than a year and a half away from the sport and face Carlos Condit at UFC 154, but all anyone seems to talk about these days is GSP facing Anderson Silva.

The superfight, which would almost be a lock for the biggest fight in MMA history, has been mentioned by both Silva and UFC president Dana White as the bout most likely to happen next should St-Pierre defeat Condit in November.

It appears, however, the only person who hasn’t signed on for that deal is St-Pierre himself.

He believes there’s a lot of disrespect in even talking about an Anderson Silva fight when he has interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit standing directly in his path.

“It’s terrible. I hate that, but I’m not focusing on that. I’m not speculating,” St-Pierre told MMAWeekly.com. “I’m thinking about Condit right now; that’s what I should do.”

Since his injury, St-Pierre has watched a welterweight division he’s ruled with an iron fist over the last few years flourish in his absence. Not only has Condit moved into position as the interim champion, but Martin Kampmann and Johny Hendricks are now poised as No. 1 contenders who fight on the same UFC 154 card that St-Pierre fights on in his return to action.

Before anyone should even fathom a superfight between St-Pierre and Silva, the Canadian believes he still has a lot of work to do at welterweight.

“I feel like I have a lot of guys that are there and I don’t understand why people are going crazy now, but I just came back from an injury, so maybe some people see me as a weak link. We’ll see what’s going to happen in the future,” said St-Pierre.

Check out this exclusive one-on-one interview with Georges St-Pierre where he talks about his recovery from surgery, Carlos Condit and much more:

Anyways, I'm glad to see this fight not happening since I was actually not sold on it yet. I want to see how GSP does coming off such a long lay off due to a severe injury. Once he fights Carlos, I don't want the other 170'ers to be waiting in limbo for yet another title shot, and GSp deciding to clear the divsion once again (if he can) is the best thing for the other fighters who have been waiting so long.

If he manages to get past 2 title defenses I would then be ready to see him fight Silva.

What are your thoughts?

No surprise. Just like every other gsp/silva thread... Ill believe it when i see it.

So in translation GSP is saying he doesn't want to fight Silva because he knows he would lose. Or he wants to wait until Silva is 40 years old.

I don't give a shit if Hendricks is next in line. Who else is there? Who cares about Hendricks? Or Kampmann? Why should we feel sorry for them? When he beats Condit and Hendricks there will be Rory and Erick Silva. So it is never ending in terms of "challengers". The UFC can make a "challenger" out of anyone they want. If GSP hasn't cleared out the division yet, then no one will ever clear out a division.

Let focking do this fight while Silva is still fighting. While he is still young enough where he feels like he can make 180lbs no problem. Lets not wait until Silva is 40 focking years old.

Give me a break.

GSP is such a pansy. He has been at 170lbs his whole career. Cruz hasn't done that. Aldo hasn't done that. Frankie hasn't done that. Penn hadn't done that. Nick Diaz hasn't done that. Nate Diaz hasn't done that. Matt Serra hadn't done that. Franklin hadn't done that. Hendo hasn't done that. Wandy hasn't done that. Anderson hasn't done that. Vitor hasn't done that. Sonnen hasn't done that. Rashad hasn't done that. Couture didn't do that. Bones will most likely move to HW.

Who the fock cares if you do a 180lb catchweight fight. Hendricks or Kampmann can get their crappy title shot next summer. Who cares if they sit out for 8 months....it happens all the time. The winner can fight Erick Silva, Rory, or Nick Diaz if they don't want to sit out.

I don't understand GSP's logic here. Win or lose, fighting Silva at a catchweight has no effect on his welterweight standing and after he fights Silva he can go right back to defending his title and "clear out the division" if he wants to.
The only thing he'd be doing is holding up the WW title for a few months, which doesn't seem as big a deal when you realize he's already been holding it up for over a year now...

Canadian Psycho 09-10-2012 02:46 PM

A Champion who actually wants to defend his belt. Hmmm... I guess Anderson and Bones didn't get the memo.

And lol @ any Silva fanboy who gives GSP shite. Even if he came right out and said, 'I don't want to fight Anderson Silva,' how is that any different than Silva saying he doesn't want to fight Jones?

Correction. Carlos Condit has held up the division.

I feel like if GSP gets by Condit convincingly then it's time for a Silva/GSP matchup. Hendricks and Kampmann aren't convincing number 1 contenders: they're just all that's left from GSP's warpath through the WW division.

GSP knows he can't look past Condit. He knows he's going to be rusty going into this bout, and he's right for blowing off speculation.

Eventually GSP will fight Anderson at a catch weight, and he will win. This would be a dream matchup for him. But he's absolutely right and smart for blowing off the question at this point in time.

Because the problem itself is that he hasn't done that in the first place.

The difference between Silva not wanting to fight Jones and GSP not wanting to fight Silva is that Silva has said straight up "I don't want to fight Jones" while GSP is making up hundreds of thousands of excuses as to why the fight between him and AS must be delayed.

When asked about a possible fight against AS at 185:

Quote:

"I need to build the muscle up to 185 so that I can stay at that weight. It will take 8 - 10 month."
When asked about a possible fight against AS at 170:

Quote:

"I think it should be at 180 so Silva won't be drained and I won't have the advantage."
When asked about a possible fight against AS at 180:

Quote:

"I want to clean out the division first because there are so many challengers here at 170."
While he may be right about the re-emergence of competition at 170, those challengers won't be going anywhere if a fight were to be made between him and Anderson Silva, so all he's really doing is delaying the fight to be made very possibly past Silva's prime.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with only focusing on your next opponent. But if he would just come out and say that he doesn't want to fight Anderson Silva, and stop making these petty excuses, there would be no need for any speculation of a possible fight between the two.

That's not really a bitch move imo. He obviously wants to be the best at 170, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Correction. Carlos Condit has held up the division.

Agreed on all points.

I don't really get the logic of the above post. GSP is just being honest. He's not ready to move to a 185 lb. body yet.

Silver, OTOH, has been fighting at LHW. It's seems odd he's fighting in a division in which has no desire to fight the champion of that division. That's just bizarre to me. If he doesn't want the LHW title, he shouldn't be fighting there is how I see it.

Now GSP is in the middle of training for a fight, coming off an injury. If he says so much as maybe, that's all the mma media will focus on. I back GSP 100% on this.
