Of course this is Leben we're talking about so maybe he just pissed away his savings, but the list of long time UFC fighters that claim to be completely broke is very long.

I just don't see how people can praise Dana's amazing "business acumen" in paying so little just because he can get away with it for now.
Leben has made hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Dollars fighting in the UFC. If he is broke, it's down to his own lack of sensibility with money, not his lack of earnings from the UFC.

EDIT: A quick google search says that Leben has made an estimated $828,000 before factoring in sponsors pay and undisclosed bonuses.

Hm I just did the same search and did find one that says $736,000 USD which isn't bad over a 10 year career either. That's $73,600 a year not counting sponsors and undisclosed pay.

Well option no. 2 it is then, Leben is an idiot that pissed away his earnings. Good for him.

Yeah, even if they are just ball park figures, Leben should still be a very wealthy man.

It's his own fault.

Lay off the booze and the drugs and you might have something to show for it.

That is a fairly ludicrous assumption from what we know about how athletes typically mismanage their money. It has been reported that within two years of retirement 78% of NFL players go bankrupt and that is the most popular and profitable sports league in this country.

Doesn't he run his own gym. Problem is most athletes and celebrities have poor money management. Sometimes they hire accountants or financial advisors only to get ripped off by them, how ironic. Spending more than their means.

This isn't specific to athletes though. Many people including myself at one point have splurged on useless things.

Even though it's his responsibility I do feel for em.

Not really. Most people aren't financially prepared to lose a year's worth of pay at any time. No matter how much money he makes, his cost of living is factored in, this dude probably isn't in some shantyhouse in a low income area.

But yeah, you'd like to think more Americans would be saving their money. Lack of saving is pretty much endemic in this country...only an estimated 5 percent of all earned income is actually saved.

Granted that's because a lot of people working regular jobs get paid pathetic money where you work 6/7 days a week and still live paycheck to paycheck, but even for people who make into 6 figures like Leben have the same problem because they have expensive bills, travel, etc.

He'll probably get away with it forever.

Just like CEOs get away with paying their hardworking factory employees like 18k per year.

750,000 over 10 years less tax or whatever it was aint exactly a lot of cash. Buy a nice house with a big mortgage and its gone in a flash, never mind addictions to whatever, supplments, training camps and so on. Its peanuts for a professional sportsman

800k - tax - training expenses - medical bills - living expenses - travel expenses = not a lot of money. Sure he's made some bad decisions, partying like Phil Ivey probably, but with that small of a backdrop it only takes a few mistakes to go broke. These guys are like CFL players, you better really love to train and compete or your life will suck.

GSP probably makes more than Leben has made in his entire career in one fight, which kind of sucks for Leben. I'm all for a fighters union so that the sport doesn't fizzle out because the fighters can't support themselves. One of the undercard fighters trains right by where I live and I wonder how he gets by.
