Chris Leben: ‘I’m Flat-Out Broke’

Quote:
After 19 UFC appearances, 12 of which were accompanied with ‘win bonus’ checks and five ‘Fight Night’ paydays, veteran Chris Leben (Pictured) claims his wallet is running on fumes.

Economic times are tough for nearly everyone, and Leben has just barely managed to stay afloat during his drug suspension.

“Yeah, I’m flat-out broke right now,” Leben revealed to MMAMania. “Being broke sucks. It’s probably one of my biggest things where I just feel terrible. I feel terrible for having put my wife through so much and all because of the poor decisions that I’ve made.

“The year’s been hard. The year’s been a struggle. The only thing I can say is it’s already happened. It’s water under the bridge. The only thing I can do now is try to make sure it never happens again in the future and prepare for the future now.

Leben’s 2012 troubles technically started last November when he was issued a 12-month ban after testing positive for Oxycodone and Oxymorphone (painkillers) following his UFC 138 loss to Mark Munoz. It marked the second time “The Crippler” had failed a drug exam.

The steroid Stanozolol was found in his system after losing to Michael Bisping at UFC 89 in October 2008.

Leben, who was a member of the original “The Ultimate Fighter” cast over seven years ago, will earn his next paycheck December 29th at UFC 155. The 32-year-old ends his extended hiatus against Karlos Vemola.

At least he admits it is down to his poor decision making.

Hopefully he'll come back with a couple of brawls that get him a FOTN bonus

I know a lot of people that have struggled with addictions to the exact same things he had a problem. Pain killers are a huge problem in Kentucky where I live and overdose is very common. I really hope Chris makes it out of this as an even stronger, bigger badder more focused fighter than we have ever seen. Wanna see the definiton of heart in a fight? Go watch his fight vs Anderson. I still think that was likely the worst beating that Andy has put on anyone inside the Octagon and Chris just kept taking it lol. Plus his wins over guys like Terry Martin were epic.

19 UFC fights with so many bonuses and he is broke after just 1 year of being out of action?

How does he manage his money?

Anderson Silva
Aldo - Dos Anjos - Mayday - Weidman - Machida - Jones

I try hard to like Leben cos he is a warrior but the guy just seems like an Idiot.

UFC 82 he was paid $25K to show, $25K to win. He has had 9 fights since then and if he got the same (when its likely his pay scale has gone up) He would have made $350,000 in that time not including sponsorship or the 2 fight night bonuses.

He really needs to get some better people around him because he obviously isnt right in the head. Twice getting some pretty substantial momentum and both times popping positive for roids. Not good.

Congratulations Mr. Leben.

All those years of getting your brain f*cked up by getting punched in the head repeatedly...over and over again...That will clearly benefit you once you stop fighting.

And now this...

Damn...

.

BELIEVE!

This strengthens my suspicion that anyone apart from the champs and top contenders isn't making jack, not even enough savings to last a year or make a real investment for the future.

Of course this is Leben we're talking about so maybe he just pissed away his savings, but the list of long time UFC fighters that claim to be completely broke is very long.

I just don't see how people can praise Dana's amazing "business acumen" in paying so little just because he can get away with it for now.
