UFC boss White confirms Matt Mitrione turned down fight with Daniel Cormier
Quote:
NOTTINGHAM, England – Dana White thought he had Daniel Cormier's next opponent all set up. Instead, it was back to the drawing board.
White thought it was going to be Matt Mitrione (5-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) – but the UFC heavyweight turned down the fight earlier this week.
"It f---ing makes me sick," White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) on Saturday following the UFC on FUEL TV 5 post-fight news conference. "Listen, you don't want big opportunities, I hear you. I get it, then. All I can say is, I guess he doesn't want big opportunities. I get it. Duly noted.
"He wants to fight a guy who weighs 205, but doesn't want to fight the guy who's the real heavyweight, the legitimate guy who's ranked. And Mitrione's not getting any younger."
The 205-pounder White alluded to is Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, who has a newly developed beef with Mitrione, the popular Season 10 contestant from "The Ultimate Fighter" who had an NFL career before jumping into MMA.
But White said a Mitrione-Jackson fight isn't in the cards. Jackson is a light heavyweight, but could move up, of course. But he's also on the shelf after pulling out of a UFC 153 fight against Glover Teixeira.
Mitrione's next fight is booked already. He's scheduled to fight Phil De Fries (9-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 155 on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.
"F---in' insane," White said. "It makes no sense to me, and it's insane. I'm a little bummed out by it. We'll figure it out. Yeah, (he's already got a fight booked). He said, 'I'll just take that one.'"
White told MMAjunkie.com that Cormier agreeing to fight Mitrione wasn't any kind of an issue.
"Cormier will fight anybody," White said. "The guys who are the real guys fight anybody, man. They'll fight anybody."
Now White and Co. will get back to work looking for who "anybody" will be next.
Strikeforce's Oklahoma City show is scheduled for Nov. 3 at Chesapeake Energy Center. Cormier, a former standout wrestler at nearby Oklahoma State University, is slated to headline the Showtime-televised main card following prelims on Showtime Extreme.

wow...
This would have been Mitrione's biggest fight and he would have had nothing to lose, nothing... and he turns it down? doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Mitrione knows he's outclassed by far. We all saw what he did to Big Foot and Barnett of all fighters. These guys are A listers man. Crazy thing is they both have the same amount of experience in MMA, and both are star athletes. One in wrestling and the other in football. Of course the wrestling pedigree complements the sport more significantly.
I don't blame em...he knows he'd get outclassed. Cormier holds himself well as a person and fighter. He's got my respects.

I would tell any UFC fighter to not take this fight. Not because I see Cormier as a challenge or legit threat, I don't. It is because he isn't in the UFC, plain and simple. Ronda and Cormier are on the same level. Sure WE know who they are, but your average UFC fan has no clue. Why go and fight someone where it is literally lose/lose? You beat him? Great, you beat non-UFC level talent*. You lose? You must really suck as you lost to non-UFC level talent*.
It makes no sense for the UFC to keep trying to pull from within it's ranks, go ahead and grab Arlovski, or Fat Timmy and get Cormiers contract over with so he can be brought into the UFC and we will find out if he is legit or not.
*While he may or may not be UFC level, the casual fan will thinks that all the UFC level talent is in the UFC. Any fights that take place anywhere else don't matter.

I think Cormier's best opponent would be a LHW at this point...
More words would appear had I not been drunker.

I hope not. Struve has to work his way through his jab, and he was a long way off with his Stipe fight, so I hipe he continues being a midcard UFC fighter.

Yah come to think of it that doesn't make sense AT ALL. How can Cormier go from Big Foot to winning the grand prix against Barnett then Mir and all of a sudden Mitrione. Sometimes they do force it. Too bad Brock and Overeem aren't around atm. Bring back Arlovski. It's evident that the HW division is still pretty thin.
Struve would be interesting, but Cormier should be fighting against a contender AT LEAST if not for the title. Then it completely undermines SF.
With no opponent maybe he'll head to LHW.
