Lyoto Machida: "Jon Jones Has Big Holes in His Game"

Quote:

Vitor Belfort's UFC 152 performance against Jon Jones has given Lyoto Machida a newfound confidence.

Few men have ever made Jones look human.

At only 25 years of age, Jones has dominated some of the greatest legends to ever put on a pair of four ounce gloves. The best minds in the sport have struggled to find any holes in his game.

Naturally, he is blessed with one of the most advantageous physiques in MMA history. As a gifted athlete and dedicated student, his world class skill set spans to every area of combat.

In life, no human being is perfect, but as far as fighting is concerned, Jones' performances have caused many to second guess the very nature of that belief.

Sometimes, it takes an old lion like Belfort to come out of his den and bring the world back to reality.

Jones may be the greatest talent MMA has ever seen, but at the beginning of each day he puts on his pants like everyone else.

It was the old lion vs. the new lion at UFC 152, and in the opening moments of the first round, the old lion nearly pulled off the biggest upset of the year.

After being taken down, Belfort quickly transitioned to an arm-bar. Fans all over the world held their breath as the unthinkable was seconds from happening. Jones' arm had reached the point of severe hyperextension and Belfort was seconds away from being crowned the new UFC light heavyweight champion.

As a potential No. 1 contender, Machida watched the fight with invested interest. Even though he has great respect for Belfort's skills, he was shocked and surprised at how the fight nearly ended.

"Vitor surprised me. He fought well. In the arm-bar, he could have ended the fight right there," said Machida during an appearance on TV Liberal's "Globo Sport."

Despite Belfort's best efforts, he wasn't able to thwart the heart and determination of the young champion. Jones escaped the submission hold and dominated the rest of the fight with an injured arm.

Belfort's hand wasn't raised at the end of the fight, but Machida gained confidence from his performance.

"Jon Jones has big holes in his game, he is not this guy that everyone looks and feels unbeatable," Machida said. "He is aloof, seeks to evolve his weaknesses, but leaves gaps in the ground, he's no black belt. He's a dangerous guy, and you have to stay alert."

I'm not really a fan of fighters talking about others flaws and holes when they've been unsuccesful against them in the past.

Everyone can see these holes. It's just that Bones found ways to fight without exposing them to his opponents. He tried standing with Machida, realized he can't keep up with the speed and footwork, lost the round and then adjusted accordingly. He was going to nullify Vitor's hand speed by grappling and it worked. Vitor threw a curveball in there when he showed everyone that he's actually a BJJ blackbelt though. Jones is not a perfect fighter, he just fights to the best of his stature and abilities.

It's important to remember that this is a hand-picked quote taken from an article written in Portuguese and translated. and that MMA sports media tends to be sensationalist. I'm sure it sounds different in context.

That said, it's a lot easier to look for submission opportunities on the jumbotron than it is off your back while being elbowed in the head, as Machida should know all too well. Also, if the Gracies say the position made it difficult for Vitor to complete the armbar, I will take their word for it.

Lyoto is always so worried about everyone else's weaknesses. I really think he should try to be more worried about his own strengths. I'd like to see an offensive, pushing the pace Machida. His whole camp and mindset always seems to be defense defense defense.

Well it is true. Machida won several battles in their fight but lost the war because like he said Bones has a lot of flaws but he is also very dangerous.

I think if anyone can say this it's Machida. Remember, he was once thought of as the "unbeatable" fighter everyone was talking about and with holes in his game being exposed, he is looking for ones to do the same to Jones.

Yes Lyoto he truly has.

BUT: Who is the one that can exploit them?

Fedor Emelianenko: The one who doesn't fall, doesn't stand up

Fedor Emelianenko | Anderson Silva | Carlos Condit | Frankie Edgar

I don't mind a fighter pointing out flaws in the games of others, but as has been said, good luck exploiting them. Anderson Silva has a noticeable flaw in his game, but what good has that served anyone?

I don't see any noticeable flaw on Anderson's game, I see a noticeable worst part among other superb parts in his game. If we both agree we are speaking about his wrestling, it's not a flaw to be under Chael Sonnen for your whole life. Everybody stays under Sonnen... It's to compare the worst of Anderson with the best of Sonnen.
