I think Cain has more of a chance against JDS than most think, but if he loses again, he will be stuck where a lot of fighters are. He will still beat most HW's but being 0-2 against the champ makes it hard to make a case for a third shot no matter how big of a run he went on.
He could drop to LHW and see how he does there. He would instantly become a contender and if he looks anything like he did at HW he will be a force to be reckoned with.
He could stay at HW and hope Junior loses the belt and have another crack at it.
Also have to take into account where Cormier lands in all of this as well as they have made it clear that they will not fight each other.

If Cain loses, it'll probably work like:-
Cain Vs Cawin/Nelson.
Cain Vs Nog/Struve/Werdum or something.
Cain Vs Overeem (if he loses).
A sreak like that = another title shot. HW has fuuuuuuuk all proper competitors.

It is just hard for them to make a case for another shot after losing 2 already. It's not the fact that they can do enough to warrant a shot, it's that it will be hard to sell JDS/Cain 3 when JDS is up 2-0.

Since HW is so weak though, it won't take long for Cain to get another shot. They arent going to put someone like Struve or Nelson in the title picture over him if they have won the same amount. The only guys who would warrent a shot over him based on their popularity are Werdum, Overeem, Cormier etc. There arent many, so unlike the situation at LHW, he wont have a long wait.

Cain is still young enough that he will be OK when JDS knocks him out again. It would be interesting to see what would happen if somehow Cormier got the UFC HW title. What would Cain do then? I don't think Dana could work his magic and get that matchup made, ever.

No one's claiming that Cain wouldn't put himself in a position to deserve another shot. The issue if he lost once again to Junior that the UFC would likely loose interest in having a competitor in a weight class that is beating other potential contendors, ala Rich Franklin and more recently Chael Sonnen.

Yeah but unlike those guys, Cain is pretty much stuck where he is. Also the age factor is a major difference there. Both Chael and Rich's best days are behind them. Cain's best days are still ahead of him and he is still pretty early in his career. He may not be a massive HW but he won't be making the 205 limit anytime soon. Not without a major overhaul. He could end up being a Fitch or Kos type except for actually being Champion at one point. He will be there for big fights and I see him being the new Mir of the division if he loses. The guy that will get the call for any Interim title fight or injury replacement.

short answer? He becomes a gate keeper, much like Frank Mir. Personally, I don't see him making the cut to 205 and being successful, especially with Jones holding the belt. He's either a definite gate keeper at 265, or risks cutting to a division he's never fought in, without knowing how his body/physique will respond.
Not everyone can be champion -- you know that, right?
