I'm watching UFC on Fuel 5 at the work (i'm a bike mechanic so i can have it playing while doing my thing) and i'm just amazed at how much Kenny improved in the last year or so.
His commentating is non stop and very technical, seems to be always spot on and very instructive.
And think he just surpassed Rogan as my favorite UFC commentator.
No idea why Kenny gets so much heat. He's ten times better than Goldberg, and his commentary doesn't ooze with bias (Joe Rogan). For my money, Joe Rogan is still tops at the moment, but Kenny is much better than the people at this forum give him credit for.
You can compare basic commentating skills in general. Goldberg isn't good at commentary period, let alone play-by-play (if we can call what he does play-by-play).
You can compare basic commentating skills in general. Goldberg isn't good at commentary period, let alone play-by-play (if we can call what he does play-by-play). Besides, I'd hardly call Kenny Florian a colour commentator, strictly speaking. He offers more analysis and play-by-play than anything.
sure, basic skills can be compared. And I agree with you on Goldie vs Kenny in regards to that. But doesn't analysis fall under the color commentator's responsibilities? Jon Anik does most of the play-by-play, as he reads the stats, commercials and so forth.
Yeah Goldie really has no idea what he is talking about and Joe has to constantly correct him. As for Kenflo, he is ok but I don't think he is great or anything.
Not knowing what he's talking about is part of Goldie's job.
It's the same thing in almost every sport, you have a play by play guy who describes what's going on without, on the face of it, understanding much, and an analyst/commentator who explains things to him.
This dynamic is there to benefit the casual fan. the guy who just tuned in and doesn't know what the hell an omoplata is needs to have that shit explained to him, but as the production company you want him to feel included. So you have Goldie ask stupid questions, and Joe explain the basics to him.
The hardcore fans will find this quite irritating, but who cares, they're already hardcore fans. The new people will learn something new, and if they stick around will learn to be annoyed with Goldie eventually. but by then they're already hooked.
Biased opinion here, I only know Rogan and Goldberg as commentators and honestly they are my favorite. I also like hearing Couture commentate. Everyone else just seems to take their job as commentators too seriously and just bore the shit out of me. Rogan's the best because of how sincere his analysis are, and Goldberg is good because he admits to his mistakes and seems genuinely humble when he commentates.
Couture was good, honestly the Bellator team is pretty good too, and they might even be better than Rogan and Goldie.
I think I'd take Anik and Florian over Mauro and Frank though, Anik and Florian come off as very generic to me but holy hell those Strikeforce broadcasts are enough to make a man angry.
Mauro's reaction to Hendo KO'ing Babalu was hilarious though.
"Have you seen his ears? They're like potatoes, looks like his head was stuck in the birth canal for 4 hours and they had to beat him out with a stick."
The mere fact he was a fighter makes Kenflo better than Rogan and Goldy. He has said some dumb things, but on the whole he just commentates the actual fight as it is actually happening while giving insight as to what the fighters are trying to achieve and why.
In such a dynamic and complex sport which is yet to be globally accepted, this is exactly the type of commentary we need and personally I think only ex-fighters should commentate. There are several available now the sport has been around a while, their insight fascinating and educational and, most importantly, accurate.
With every UFC event I find Rogan and Goldy more bland and not improving technically, they are the voices of the UFC but I wouldn't think twice about replacing them with fighters. Go Kenflo.
I enjoyed Couture's commentary and love Bas's commentary. Annik and KenFlo are the B team for the UFC at the moment and I'm sure they could both be easily replaced.
I enjoy Goldie and Rogan. Goldie is a dork but that's half the fun of listening to him and Joe do the commentary as it adds another element to the experience and doesn't take away from it. I agree that sometimes Joe sucks on a guys nuts a little too hard but it really doesn't bother me that much.
I would like to see them add a third to the team permanently and that guy should be Bas in my opinion. He'd be a great personality to add into the shuffle with those two.
The one thing I will say about Florian commentating is that I can't tell the damn difference between his and Anik's voice. Holy **** it's been how many events and they still sound the same to me. My friends came over to watch the fight and one of the first things they asked was why there was only one person commentating. The only time I know it's Florian is when he starts talking about the technical aspects of the fight.
I'm a big fan of anything Joe Rogan does, actually.
